Juan Francisco's OPS last year was .745. Are you going to tell me that he was a good spot in the lineup? He would have been ahead of Colby's "rally's killed by a strikeout" stat. In fact I like that, I think there should be a definitive key stat, "K's with at least one runner on", "K's with RISP", "K's with nobody on". I even like the stat "K's while trailing and later than the sixth inning".
We have all these analytics saying that it does not give you an advantage to sacrifice an out to move the runner. I would argue those figures are skewed by not taking into account the much more negative impact if the out is a strikeout.
My point is I think that for a player like Colby Rasmus and Juan Francisco and such OPS is not a great stat to use. I will concede that Colby is an excellent defender at a premium position. So he is much more valuable than the poor defender Francisco. However his lack of overall contact and high slugging portion of his OPS, make that stat over rated. Your slugging for a solo home run and grand slam are the same. The impact of those two on the game are much different.
Does anyone know if these type of K stats exist? The similar K peripherals for pitchers for situation would be very useful.
