There's absolutely no way I'd give up this much to get Marte. Marte is a GREAT player, but entering his age 32 season, he may only have 2-3 years of elite performance left. I'd rather resign Bo and keep the Barger and the prospects. I do appreciate that Marte may be worth this much to someone. He has a lot of value based on his contract - but the Jays aren't penny pinching, so I don't think we need to give up that much young talent to add the contractual value... -

All good man. I think you're just downplaying the value of information. If the Jays believe they have a shot at Marte at a reasonable price, then that could influence their negotiations with Bo. If Bo's asking for too much, they know they can pivot. You're going to hear that the Jays are kicking the tires with all kinds of players this offseason. Don't read too much into it. I don't think kicking the tires on Marte indicates anything about the possibility of Bo resigning or not. I think we all want a FO that is out there asking questions, gathering information and getting a feel for what options they may have. I fully suspect that's what Atkins is doing with Marte.

I can't imagine it would take much? His ERA was good last year, but nothing else looks particularly good. He's been below replacement level in 3 of the last 5 years. This will be controversial, but I'm not sure he's actually an upgrade over Little or Flu - unless Petey thinks he can unlock something. I guess the Stuff+ isn't bad?

C'mon man. Nobody is bullying anyone. The Jays "checking in" on Marte is simply them doing their job and collecting information. It doesn't mean Bo is gone, nor should they wait until they finish negotiations with Bo to inquire about Marte. I just pointed that out and others reiterated it after ValiantJaysFan doubled down to suggest it's unnecessary (which I still don't get - what is the harm in gathering information on Marte again? Unless you think we're wasting resources or don't have the man power to do such a thing - I don't get it). Nobody was tarred and feathered, nobody was bullied - the board simply provided a pretty logical answer/response to the original question that was asked. ValiantJaysFan - I'm confused as to why you're so upset. I meant no harm with my response - and perhaps I could have phased it better. You're completely welcome here friend.

I fully agree that Jays should continue to look to add to the rotation for the reasons you note, plus the reality that Gaus, Bieber and Lauer are set to become free agents after the 2026 season. But - despite the inherent "risks" with the current rotation, it's really not in terrible shape. That's all I was saying.

I would yes, but I don't see it happening. Actually, it probably makes a lot of sense that he ends up back in Detroit to finish his career off. That one kind of seems like fate (once you get past the fact that you're in Detroit). The young emerging Tigers could use a vet like Verlander.

There was that stretch in August that was incredible fun to watch. My brain agrees with you, but my heart absolutely LOVED watching him pitch for the Jays this year. This year was so f'ing incredible for so many different reasons.

Wouldn't the idea be to dump Berrios to free up money to sign a better starter, like Bassitt? ie, if Bassitt is going to cost 1 year $15M (or say 2 years/$26M), then you could trade Berrios + $7M AAV (and maybe a middling prospect) for a lottery ticket and theoretically improve the team (if you believe Bassitt is a clear upgrade over Berrios). I'm not sure Semien is a good fit for the Jays. He's more of a last resort to replace Bo. I don't want to have to pay him and have to fill a rotation spot. The Semien/Nimmo trade is interesting. Both have been great players, but both are declining. Nimmo is more likely to be productive for a couple more years, but he's also on a longer and more expensive deal. You might see a deadcat bounce from both, or neither. It will be interesting to see it play out.

It's wild that Verlander will be 43 next year. What a beast. His age 39 season is still mindboggling. 18-4, 1.75 ERA, 6.1 fWAR. He's one of the greats.

It's like Atkins reads this board and kept hearing a few people screaming incessantly that this team needed more power and needed to add 2 impact bats - forcing him to cave and sign a guy who goes against a lot of their values. Thanks guys. Tony does make pretty good contact for a power guy though - so he didn't completely break the mold. I think there's a good chance he rebounds, despite what projections say (I don't think they take injuries into account very well). -

I must admit - Bellinger has shown a lot of resiliency to get his career back on track since those shoulder injuries. I'm just not sure I can trust the sustainability. I do like the power/contact ability and the fact he's a great athlete who can play multiple positions though.
