  1. I'm pretty sure if Darvish retires he doesn't get paid - so doubtful he would just randomly retire and insurance won't pay for s*** unless he's actually injured. That said, SD is clearly in a must win now mode. They probably only have a 2-3 year window (and I kind of hope this blows up in their face as I don't like this approach in general). The lower luxury tax hit obviously helps a little bit right now, which is why they did 6 years, but it also tightens their window even more as paying Darvish $20M per year for 3-4 years at the end of the deal, when he's unlikely to be playing (effectively) is going to further hurt their financial flexibility.
  2. Apparently the Padres just extended Darvish. 6 years $108M He's entering his age 36 season. This seems like a logical decision from a rational GM.
  3. Apparently the 1st round going to SA is only Top 6 protected, so they better f***ing like their chances of climbing up to 6th - otherwise this is a disaster. Can't give up a Top 10 pick for Peoltl.
  4. Sorry, but I disagree. Barnes is more redundant with Siakam and Precious IMO. OG is a 3 and D guy. Barnes is more of a paint guy who handles the ball more. OG is statistically one of the worst finishers in the NBA and I believe his 3 pt% when he's not in the corner is pretty bad. I think OG wants more opportunity even though the results suggest he has limitations and that's creating some friction. I guess we'll see what happens. Looks like we're buying - not selling and will just try to re-up FVV, GTJ, etc. and stay on this treadmill for another year? This FO knows what they are doing, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Has anyone seen a report on what the protection is on this 1st rounder we gave up for Poeltl? It's has to be Top 15 or Top 20 protected right?
  5. Yeah in like April last year. Saul Korman passed away in January 2021 at 86. Sounds like COVID was a big factor, but Saul's son also wanted to retire. I just learned this today myself. Loved their commercials. Sad I never made it down to buy something.
  6. After the iconic Korry's Clothiers closed - Arash was in tough. Change is good.
  7. I love how they don't have an updated picture of Caleb Joseph. Overall - I think this is a really strong broadcast crew.
  8. I love single digit numbers in general. So pure.
  9. Congrats. It's been pretty incredible to follow his career.

Should they host it in the dome with 50,000 fans?
  11. There are some bizarre (IMO) rumours about FVV to Orlando for Suggs floating around. I think that would be great. https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-magics-fred-vanvleet-trade-interest-gets-intriguing-jalen-suggs-twist Someone said FVV for Suggs and Isaac or FVV for Suggs, Mo Bamba, Ross would also work. Doesn't make sense to me - but I think that would be a great return for an aging and inefficient FVV.
  12. I used Bichette to counter to the thought "a player who can hit .300 is so good at getting hits that they can more or less suck farts at everything else on the field and still be good. See e.g. Luis Arraez". It was a great example IMO. Most of the other examples of players who hit .300 while still being lead average or below hitters are actually good at other aspects of baseball (Ichiro, Young, etc.). I guess David Eckstein is a good example. He actually wasn't very good at base running or defense. Ben Revere isn't a bad example. He slapped his way to several .300 seasons. The only thing he didn't suck farts at was base running and that alone allowed him to be an OK starter for a few seasons. I'm going to move on though - 1 extra hit a week does typically make you a stud player.
  13. I'm not sure the pitching staff would enjoy this.
  14. Blue Jays released LHP Matthew Gage. Gage was designated for assignment last week by the Blue Jays to make room for newly-signed reliever Chad Green. The 29-year-old southpaw will head to free agency in search of a new opportunity after going unclaimed on waivers. He posted a solid 1.38 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and a 12/6 K/BB ratio over 13 innings (11 appearances) last year for Toronto. ------------------------ Does this mean that Gage cleared waivers and instead of keeping him in AAA, we just cut him loose? If so, probably just being a nice organization and letting him go to find another opportunity?
  15. How about this obvious thought Grant - neither player should be in your starting lineup. End of story.
  16. Do you want a .306, 101 wRC+ hitter who can't play defense or run the bases in your lineup daily simply because he's hitting .306?
  17. Ichiro is a career .311 hitter, yet was only 4% above the league average. Dante Bichette showed us for years that you can hit .300, while being a pretty bad player. From 1997 to 2001, he hit .306 with a 101 wRC+ and a total WAR of 1.6 over the 5 year span.
  18. Sorry, I don't get the comparison to height at all. And there are plenty of examples of batters who hit .300 and were below average hitters (per wRC+). But - my point was simply the difference between a .300 hitter and a .250 hitter (which could also be the difference between a ML career and a AAAA player) doesn't feel like it's very big when you break it down to 1 more hit per week - especially given the amount of factors/luck/randomness involved in BABIP. Of course what you do with your hits plays a huge factor. If your extra hit per week is always a HR, then obviously you're a stud. If you're David Eckstein - then meh, whatever.
  19. Well no - obviously I wouldn't either. I'm not suggesting that. I'm just saying Arb #'s shouldn't be primarily based on counting stats without any valued added for defense.
  20. I see. I generally agree with Crash though. The difference between a .300 hitter and a .250 hitter isn't that big. That's another reason why I (we?) no longer put a ton of value in someone's average.
  21. How f***ing stupid is that? How long has arbitration been a thing in MLB and why on earth would it take this long for someone to change the system? Below average hitters (who were still VERY valuable and great players) like Yadi, Ozzie, etc. will just always get the shaft?
  22. I don't equate 1 game winning hit to 'one extra win'. That hit is no more valuable than the hit that scored the first run that game, or the hit/walk that advanced the winning run into scoring position, or the hit with nobody on in the 3rd inning. That hit just happened to occur at the moment that scored the winning run (after a bunch of other valuable things already happened). That said - the gap between a ML career and one that fizzles out in AAA is really small.
  23. Interesting breakdown. Why isn't defense, base running and advanced stats like wRC+ included in this comparison? I mean it's neat to compare him to Lindor and all and adjust the $$$ based on games played and such - but Lindor is a legit stud defensively.
  24. Unpopular opinion, but this is why I used to be a Wilner supporter. Fielding calls from angry neck breathing causal fans who know next to nothing about baseball is brutal. He could have just gone along with their outdated views - but I think more often than not, he tried to help educate fans by explaining that hitting .240 doesn't mean Varsho is a s***** hitter or that Gausman's 12-10 season doesn't necessarily mean he's underperformed. That said - he often came off as condescending - but most days, the collective IQ of the callers was like -4, so f***'em.
  25. Oh god, this was highlighted by MLB or TSN or something on Facebook last week. Comments just full of people who've seemingly been bottling up their rage to let everyone know "ThAt'S whY WAR iSn'T A ReeeeL sTaT" and "NErdS hAvE RUiNEd BaSEBaLl" I mean this shouldn't be complicated. When evaluating players, you should look at all the information/stats; however, some of the more advanced stats deserve a little more weight and if you need a very quick, high level analysis/comparison - you should use WAR.
