  1. I think Maile is at least as good as Martin behind the plate; he seems to call a good game.
  2. It is good to see the win, but disappointing because I think they could have taken 2 out of 3 with better managing by Gibbons (poor suicide squeeze call) and better pitching in the first 2 games. I give Gibbons credit for today's game by putting Martin at 3rd base; maybe Gibbons can continue to find ways to get Martin in games without wearing him out behind the plate. Maile certainly is no ball of fire at the plate, but he is good defensively and can only get better at hitting (it is hard to imagine him getting worse).
  3. I pin this loss on Gibbons. The Blue Jays only needed a sac fly to score the 4th run from Darwin Barney, who is one of the better hitters on the team. The suicide squeeze is normally used with weak hitting pitchers in the NL, not with reliable hitters like Barney.
  4. I disagree, I would play Goins over Barney and I give Gibbons credit for doing just that with Tulowitzki out. When Goins plays well, the team plays well. It was like when Doug Flutie was on the Buffalo Bills, the team won with Flutie even though Rob Johnson looked like more of an NFL quarterback than Flute. Flutie had heart and did what it took to win, so does Goins.
  5. I wonder what is up with Chris Coghlan. He has had above WAR values of 2.4 and 3.3 in 2014 and 2015 respectively with the Cubs, and whenever he gets sent down to AAA he hits well (according to the stats), but now with the Blue Jays he seems like a defensive liability and not reliable at the plate - http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=6878&position=OF Unfortunately, this year Devon Travis is taking a similar route as Chris Coghlan, but hopefully Devon can turn things around. Ryan Goins seems like a similar type of player who can never seem to be a consistently good player although he has shown promise at times (however, Goins has been fairly consistent defensively).
  6. It is good to see Goins swinging at good pitches to hit. I was getting frustrated at watching him take good pitches and then with 2 strikes swing at junk pitches. I like the aggression, as soon as a Blue Jay sees a good pitch then they should be swinging.
  7. Pillar also had a chance to tie the game with a sac fly with one out but instead started his at-bat in the 9th by swinging for the fences on sinking changeups; it was sickening to watch. But good old Gibbons will say something like "that is the way this team was put together, to hit home runs". For me it is time to record games and watch them quickly within a few minutes instead of spending an agonizing 2 - 3 hours watching nonstrategic Gibbons Blue Jays baseball. Expos and the NL please return to Montreal!
  8. I wonder if this happened when he got hit in his hand by Martin's throw to 2B Friday night in Cleveland?
  9. I was hoping that Cecil would have a good game but when Buck Martinez mentioned that maybe Cecil could pitch 2 innings and close the game out, I had a feeling that something bad would happen.
  10. It was a slow bouncing ball that took a bad bounce. Goins had to come in on the ball to have a chance to throw Lindor out. With a fast runner like Lindor, a sharply hit grounder would have been an easier chance. If it was such a routine play then why didn't Travis throw it to 1B since the ball went right to Travis; obviously Travis held onto the ball because Lindor can get down the baseline so fast.
  11. Did you watch the game? The ball took a big bounce, it wasn't a routine play; that is why it was called a single, not an error.
  12. The idea is to get 3 outs and not give up any runs.
  13. It is great to see Kevin Pillar is swinging the bat well (4 hits). This means that Pillar should be back with the Blue Jays on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see if Jose Bautista is back for a rehab stint this week.
  14. That lineup is a bit better than last night's lineup - Smoak is out and Tulowitzki is in (so there should be fewer strikeouts). But I wonder why Saunders is back in RF. Carrera has much more experience in RF, and Saunders normally plays LF. For my future reference, where did you get the lineup? I see the Blue Jays lineup on the Barry Davis twitter, but what about the Indians lineup?
  15. Any of the 6 - 8 hitters. I think Upton should be batting # 8.
  16. Lumberjack Smoak in the # 7 spot tonight. He might whiff, but if he makes contact the ball can go a long way. I don't feel good about Upton in the number 5 spot. What is Gibbons thinking?
  17. At the start of last year (2015) and in 2014 I said a few times that the Blue Jays were almost unwatchable for me; I like good defense and the Blue Jays were a team made up of individual stars who could mash the ball, but they threw many games away on defense. How quickly people forget. The Blue Jays improved the team by improving their defense not their offense. I appreciate Devon Travis now because he has improved significantly on defense; the Blue Jays weren't winning with all offense and poor defense in the first half of 2015.
  18. He showed potential at times last year, however, the odds are against me (that Goins will get 2 hits tonight); there is a good chance that Goins will strike out 3 times and hit into at least one double play.
  19. I will stick by that for last year; obviously the Blue Jays are much better this year with Tulowitzki at SS and Travis at 2B. Last year the Blue Jays did play much better with Reyes at SS and Goins at 2B. This year Travis gets to play with Tulowitzki at SS (instead of Reyes). Last year Goins was a better defender at 2B than Devon Travis, but this year there is little difference (Travis has greatly improved on defense). Travis is now an established star in my opinion, whereas Goins has shown that last year was probably his career year on offense (even though he was below average at the plate) and defense.
  20. I predict that Goins will have 2 hits tonight. The time in AAA gave him a chance to work on his swing and to remember that he is not a power hitter (he can get sent back down at any time if he isn't humble and prepared to listen to the coaches). Too bad that Goins doesn't work on his outfield game, Darwin Barney can do it. Based on Zaun and Kevin Barker past statements, any professional infielder should be able to play a good left (or right) outfield.
  21. Interesting fact: the Blue Jays have only 486 runs scored against (RA) them so far this season, which is the fewest in the American League. This is in spite of the fact that they have played more games than most. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standings/index.jsp
  22. I enjoy listening to Kevin Barker. I hear him quite often on 590 AM in the morning, and he is always entertaining.
  23. Amazing plate protection by Russel when he slapped the strike 3 pitch foul, and then the home run. This is the first exciting game that I recall over the past week or so.
  24. So glad that the Blue Jays decided not to tank tonight Great at bat by Donaldson and beautiful home run by Edwin. However, it is too early to celebrate.
  25. I don't have much confidence in Feldman; can he get though an inning or two without giving up a run.
