  1. this is right and the ultimate reason a trade would never happen. The Jays are not in a position to give up a contributing core roster piece and empty out their farm. The Jays are one of the worst possible fits for Sale. We don't have that blue cheap prospect to headline a trade.
  2. I don't always jump on the Thole hate but that was ridiculous, how do you not score on that.
  3. And limit pitcher-catcher meetings to 1 per inning and maximum of 5 for the game. Same thing with those manager-pitcher meetings and the pitching coach- pitcher meetings.
  4. Homeruns are way up in the last couple of years with the juiced balls, and offence is picking up, what problem is the MLB trying to solve? And the idea that relievers hurt with the excitement at the end of games makes no sense. What is Manfred talking about? An ace bullpen can keep the score closeif you're behind and give your offence a chance to come back just as likely as it is to close the door on the other team when you're up 2 in the 6th inning.
  5. 20 sound fair, no true blue chipper and there isn't as much depth as you'd like but lots of guys on the verge of taking off.
  6. Bautista's always been a bad outfielder though, even in his younger days, its part of the reason he became a journeyman in the place. Before the power breakout with us he actually could have been a everyday full time player if his defence was averagish
  7. I'm extremely encouraged by SRF's FSL numbers but he is kind of repeating the MWL and the FSL. I think that gives him a slight advantage even though he's putting up these numbers at the same age as Syndergaard. Also, this is the first time SRF has truly dominated, so lets see if this isn't just a hot streak. Syndergaard OTH, put up stellar numbers in the MWL as a 19 year old before doing well in A+.
  8. 'Mexican AAA' refers to a league, not just a team. There's 16 teams in the Mexican League, they're not really a MILB league and have no professional affiliations with MLB teams. The level of competition is considered equivalent to a AAA league, that's where the 'AAA' comes from.
  9. I wouldn't say that's true at all. Everything matters, every plate appearance, and every inning. If someone isn't doing well in Rookie ball that should effect how you project them in higher levels and their likelihood of eventually making it to the bigs. Its very rare for someone to flop at the lower levels and then turn it around.
  10. When someone's making elite contact like that its kind of hard to interpret their walk rate. We don't really know if Bichette is a free swinger just based on that.
  11. This is the most ridiculous thing i've ever seen. The Yankees financial advantage and their dominance over a FA market isn't what it used to be 10 years ago. I don't follow Yankee fandom much but is this a real thing among their fans? Are they okay with the current mediocrity because they think they're building towards something 3 years from now?
  12. yeah and the team options are not that cheap given how mediocre he is, 7,9 and 10 million through 2019. You really gotta believe he's on the verge of a breakthrough to gamble on him and actually give up a real piece for him.
  13. The 4 SB and 0 CS is kind of interesting, and he's only been on 1st 19 times. Obviously you shouldn't read too much into 70 PA's but maybe he is more athletic than he looks.
  14. Well you're free to cherry pick stats with arbitrary cutoffs but here's the bottom line, Smoak has a career war of 0.5 in 2800 PA's, that's 4 and half full time seasons worth. He's a few months away from turning 30, if you think this is a guy worthy of an investment then lets agree to disagree. edit: and i don't get the Mark Trumbo thing at all, he's had 3 league average seasons before. Actually, he's only been bad for one season. Before this year Trumbo's career numbers were considerably better.
  15. ball parking it, maybe around 105-110 wRC+ or in other words not good for a platoon player with no defensive value.
  16. oh please, lets not make excuses for "our guy". A stupid decision is a stupid decision. There is no justifiable reason to ever offer a bum like Smoak a guaranteed contract let alone one for 4 million a year. I don't care if he rescues kittens from trees during his off days or has Lincoln level leadership qualities, this was a stupid thing to do.
  17. This contract resembles what's going in the NBA this summer, i don't understand on what planet a replacement(or sub replacement) level player even needs a contract let alone one for $4 million a year. Its disgustingly stupid, i get that its not really a big deal but its so disappointing to see Atkins do something so obviously wrong headed.
  18. Keith Law likes to think he's an analytics and evidence based guy and he regularly says something asinine like that
  19. back up catchers are by definition not supposed to be good, it would be a sub optimal distribution of resources if that was the case. This isn't meant for you strictly but the amount of whining about Thole around here is ridiculous, backup catchers don't and are not supposed to move the needle much one way or the other. There are 14 catchers this season so far with negative war who have as many PA's as Thole. Passable catchers who cost nothing are not easy to come buy. Then the question becomes if you want to spend money and resources on these guys.
  20. yeah i guess it comes down to how you account for variance. The prospect projections have a higher variance than projections for MLB players with a couple of years of experience, many executives in the league will probably prefer a 50th ranked MLB player over a 30th ranked prospect.
  21. went back and looked at the Souther League with the same cutoffs. 2016 Tyler O'Neil 160 2016 Jake Bauer 136 2016 Wily Adames 133 2015 Jesse Winker 137 2013 Joc Pederson 155 2012 Matt Davidson 134 2009 Logan Morrison 142 2008 Ivan DeJesus Jr 132 2008 Jordan Schafer 130 2007 Justin Upton(19 yo!!!) 158 2007 Evan Longoria 155
  22. 300 PA's, around half a season, seemed fair. But you make good point regardless. Like i acknowledged there are a few impressive seasons in the EL(Snider, Gomez and Machado) but even after including those guys Tellez's season is still impressive.
  23. How impressive are Tellez's numbers? Over the past 10 years here are the 21 year old(or younger) hitters who've put up a wRC+ of 130 or higher in the EL 2016 Rowdy Tellez 150 2016 Clint Frazier 138 2015 Gavin Cechinni 139 That's it. There were a couple right at the cutoff and there are a few impressive age 19 and 20 seasons from guys like Machado, Snider and Carlos Gomez. Even conservatively speaking Tellez is having one of the 10 best seasons in the Eastern League in the past 10 years, with a good case for the top 3. I don't see how that is not worthy of a top 100 selection even with all his flaws. edit:Clint Frazier was ranked 21st btw, even with an extreme defence penalty Tellez should have been a top 100 guy.
  24. Upton has negative value, that's quite a bit to give up for a guy having his first fully healthy season in a while, not saying it wouldn't be a good gamble but its not a no brainer imo.
  25. Hutch is hitting his spots, he's on tonight
