  1. The eyeball test suggests otherwise.
  2. I'm actually finding myself shouldering my way to the front of the Pagan train. For some reason I keep forgetting he's a switch-hitter. Throw in the good defense for a smaller park and less intense position (LF in RC) + a low K-rate and some good baserunning numbers. I like it. Coincidentally, the biggest Pagan proponent back when the offseason was young was the late BBBB. edit: And this hair
  3. Don't get too hung up on the WAR total. Fewest IP means smallest number of opportunities to produce. Add 65-70 innings and it probably approaches Cleveland's BP (509 IP), which featured the best RP on the planet for the final two months.
  4. Sorting by WAR total, tied-9th in the AL (3.9) while throwing the fewest number of innings (464). Performed well in the SSS playoffs too, particularly in the Baltimore game, Texas Game 3, and the Cleveland series. I'd say that's solid enough that the bad BP narrative should stop.
  5. What did the "bad" BP cost the Jays last year? Was it even bad?
  6. It was a double to the wall. I think it was the huge flub by Bourn in RF with Saunders not knowing how to run it. Weird play, but I forget all the details. Luckily he got cashed in from 3rd by the next batter, but it could have ended up costing.
  7. How can you be sure though? Pearce hasn't played a MLB game since going under the knife. Shatkins must know they have no way of being certain what his throwing arm will be like. I think it's worth erring on the side of caution here. Though I agree Saunders hurts to watch out there, I don't think that makes Pearce's maybe-elbow a safer proposition.
  8. Pearce being expected to play regular OF concerns me, although maybe my concerns are unwarranted? If I'm overreacting, then I want Valbuena. Someone tell me I'm overvaluing the situation, but having Valbuena spot start at 3rd to give JD a DH game is a lot better than giving those ABs to Barney.
  9. Curious if anyone is interested in picking up an affordable Saunders deal in addition? I think, if there are still deals to be made, that the FO is still looking for an OF. I think we can all agree that the OF is still too rickety, even with Bautista. I also think the FO is wary of putting too much weight on a recovering Pearce by sticking him in the OF. As much as I'd like Valbuena, 1B is adequately covered while one corner OF spot is still running with a low-WAR platoon.
  10. Morales is pretty inferior to EE, but Pearce should be a decent upgrade on Saunders. Bautista should be able to top his production from last year fairly easily, but that could be helped along by not writing RF next to his name in permanent ink. I think it's pretty possible that Tulo and Martin outperform their 2016 selves if they can avoid those total blackout slumps. Liriano should be a notable upgrade from Dickey in the rotation, though the BP is pretty obviously weaker without a Cecil replacement (as of yet). Starter health has been a pretty nice point of luck for the Jays the last couple of years. Not that it means someone will definitely get hurt in 2017, but there's no reason to think the good luck will continue. We already know Estrada has that lingering back problem, for instance. Probably not as good as last year's team, but perhaps not as big of a downgrade as it seems. I'd say this is a strong Wild Card contender even if it's technically "worse" than the 2016 squad -- and that team, IMO, got some pretty s*** luck with the collective slump at the end of the year. 89 wins was beneath them.
  11. You'll find that grip yet.
  12. Said the fans of 28 other teams too. Get a grip.
  13. In fairness, they'd be turning EE and JB into first rounders for the June draft.
  14. So you're arguing the Dodgers offered up Grant Holmes, Frankie Montas, and Jharel Cotton for Rich Hill and that Josh Reddick was a thrown in non-factor?
  15. You have to think the FO might be considering an extension too. If part of their offseason strategy is to lock up a role player or two before the market opens then extending Estrada the way they did for Smoak seems like a good move (depending on health, of course). They're likely to at least lose one of either Liriano and Estrada after this season, and maybe Happ a year later. So I'd be cool with them spending large on a FA SP if they can shrewdly extend contracts for good performers they already have and not go into the offseason with more than one gap in the rotation.
  16. Is Conger still available? Maybe another guy who wants more than 45 starts if he can help it.
  17. Give money to people I don't know? It's a hard sell for me to even pick up the tab on my date's drinks past the first one.
  18. I can also see a Zeke-Upton platoon, depending on if the FO picks up a dedicated OF. Whoever doesn't start a particular game will probably regularly be a late game defensive replacement too. I don't think there are any guys on the open market who are particularly good OFs to have running around out there in a tight game if their next AB isn't for seven or eight spots. This also depends on what the day-to-day plan is with Smoak and if management see Pearce as a viable OF. It's possible they aren't even certain what Pearce's defensive capabilities are yet.
  19. Well yes, this is exactly what I mean. The circumstances around acquiring each of these guys is a factor. And yeah, Angel Pagan's hair might be worth a signing on its own. A beautiful man.
  20. Completely agree. If the knee is fine I take Saunders immediately, and also 100 times out of 100 over Jay Bruce.
  21. The sequel is not worth your time. There's a huge difference between unintentionally bad and intentionally bad.
  22. You don't think that's Wild Card-contender good? FWIW, Rays' staff is now Archer, Odorizzi, Cobb, Snell... Andriese? Honeywell?
  23. Felix, Iwakuma, Smyly, Paxton, Gallardo. Not bad. Missing the WC by two games seems to have really stung for Seattle. There were some really inopportune bounces against the Mariners in that elimination game against Oakland.
  24. ...which still means they'd have had to do free agent shopping and still saved themselves the effort.
  25. Poor you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVxUUotm1P4
