Almost every proposed rule change since Manfred has taken over has been terrible. Stop f***ing with baseball. Hardly any of them are actual fixes to problems. Reducing the K-zone is just going to make games longer and destroy pitchers, and 4-pitch walks are such a miniscule part of the game that removing them saves no notable amount of time and actually hurts the game because stuff can still happen, such a catcher missing a catch or a runner trying to take the pitcher by surprise.

Kind of sucks this is the situation. If he's the only legit SP depth and he has to be benchwarming in the bullpen then that's not especially great for keeping him loose as a starter. Manufacturing Biagini into another SP seems even more legitimate now.

If he's still solid in CF, then this may actually hurt his trade value, no? You'd think even a bad performance in CF would mean teams would still pay top dollar for him to go into one of their corner spots, so why not try to just wring that extra bit of CF juice out of him? Because Pittsburgh play to win!!

I find that nearly every NFL game teeters pretty close to being completely unwatchable. The amount of time between plays and the number of commercials is just torture. The best winning strategy is almost always to kill the clock while you have the lead (ie: not play the game for as long as the rules allow). At least in hockey the team not in possession of the puck can actively try to take it from the team killing time. NFL football is straight up built to be a vehicle for advertisements. It sucks because the actual game is really cool.

I don't see how Biagini's preferences affect whether or not the move is a sensible idea. Obviously if he refuses the assignment (for some dumb reason) it's moot, yeah, but it's not like the strategy is somehow a worse idea just because he's whining. You can bring up player comfort in any discussion about strategy so I don't really see why it's suddenly relevant here.

But why do you think Biagini is such a sure thing? He's not. If he becomes a decent SP, that's 175 IP the FO might not have to hunt for at this time next year. That's pretty valuable, especially considering his 7th inning role can be filled by the proven guys who have just been brought in. If Smith and Howell look awful coming out of ST and no one else steps up, then just put Biagini back in the pen for the time being. There's way more room to maneuver here than some people are acknowledging.

Agreed. It seems like a pretty sound strategy that could pay off for both 2017 and 18. Biagini threw some huge innings last season but he's also no more proven than the two guys who were just signed, so this is probably less of a risk than some people perceive. I'd still prefer one more decent arm to get picked up before Biagini goes to stretch out, but even without doing that I think this is a good move. Best of all is that it's completely reversible if he struggles as a SP or if the 2017 BP really falters. But why not try it? If it doesn't work out, chuck him back in the pen. It's not like the reverse situation we saw last year with the debate about Sanchez going to the pen. Much tougher to re-condition to a SP from a RP. There's a very low cost to converting in the other direction, though. And it's not like Biagini is a super reliever. Howell and Smith have much longer track records anyway.

I wonder if the pen is done at this point. With these two solid acquisitions, a third should really open up Biagini to try his hand at starting. Better late than never considering there are two empty spots in the rotation penciled in for 2018.

I wonder if the FO is holding out to see which position between LF and 1B requires attention. If Pearce is LF-capable, then 1B will be addressed during the season. If he's not, then he'll be planted at 1B and an OF will be acquired. There's only one major positional hole in the batting order, but it's going to take some time to determine which position it actually is. Until then, there are warm bodies capable of covering those positions who shouldn't be too much of an anchor given the considerable talent elsewhere on the field.

Last overall or last in the East? Last in the East isn't isn't really comparable to the last space squads in the NL divisions. The O's are going to be a mega pain in the ass, although the astounding luck they had last year with Britton being perfect probably doesn't repeat and probably keeps them from even getting to 83 wins. Machado, Davis, Jones, Trumbo in the heart of the order is still a pretty good way for an evening watching baseball to be ruined.

I think there's plenty of talent on the 2017 team that could actually perform better than 2016's. I voted and am arguing for worse simply because conventional expectations seem to suggest a weaker team. Also a factor for Win total is the strengthening of the division. Boston is stronger, Tampa is stronger, New York could easily overachieve, and Baltimore, as much as we hate them, will still probably play at a 76-79 win pace by homering their way through middling pitching staffs. 76 games against these teams will be some tough waters for the Blue Jays' playoff hopes, despite how well they project.

Seems like this is a scenario in which a manager's decisions can actually have a fairly large effect over 162 games. If he gives too many ABs to Smoak over a healthy and capable Pearce, then he could conceivably leave an entire win's worth of production on the bench. Is there an argument against this?

I think "Is Pearce legitimately okay to play the outfield" should be a question worth considering too. Whether or not it should be a factor in upgrading Smoak is debatable, but I think it's reasonable to toss around. But to answer your question, I think Carter is worth eating Smoak's salary. Sure, it looks bad to the bosses when you immediately scrap a $4M investment, but just in terms of paying for wins... Carter's salary + the sunk cost probably gets to $8-9M total. That's worth a win above replacement even if the invoice is convoluted.

I think what we have is technically worse. The team didn't get drastically better in any way and is now one more year older in general. All it takes is an injury in the rotation to make it obviously worse.
