I'm really encouraged from what I've heard Shatkins talk about development. I think they are right when they talk about there still being a big deficiency in how franchises develop players. Its no coincidence clubs like the Cardinals, Indians and Giants yield great results from players year after year. At least half of MLB clubs operate in that once they draft a player he's either a good player or a bad player right away. There isn't nearly enough of a focus on improving player's skills. Atkins briefly talked about his at the State of the Franchise.
I'm really excited to see what the new Spring Training Facility is going to look like. Hopefully they find a site pretty soon.
If Chappy and BTS are only at the top because of their draft position then I guess that leaves me as the #1 drafter. No point in even playing the season imo.
Just a heads up- Jared Cowen will now be playing defence. Might have the worst instincts I've ever seen in a hockey player. Good news is he likely is only there for another couple months.
After the run the Blue Jays made I don't think anyone can say the trades didn't work out for the Blue Jays. Even though the Mets made it to the World Series I'll take the Jays season over the Mets. Everyone will remember Bautista's HR in game 5 but no one will remember the Mets run.
Thats true too. Pure speculation but I think he would be. He wants to maximize his earnings and also wants a big deal for the Union. If he defers some money he will still be signed to a large deal with the total value being high.
I think ownership is a big part of it too. If Rogers left AA with a larger budget in 2015 I think Martin's contract would have been more evenly spread out. By backloading a contract you do save a little on inflation as well. If Martin's contract was flipped you would be paying more in today $ since 20 million in 2019 isn't worth as much as 20 million in 2015.
Decent article by Cameron but I agree I think it will cost more than 75 Million. I also think he will produce higher than 8.5 WAR over the next 4 years. I'd be comfortable doing 4/85 and might stretch it to 5/100 if you have to.
I suspect Bautista will ask for 4 or 5 years at 22-25 Million per. I wonder if the Jays are open to deferring money like the Davis Contract.
First of all the Sens FO barely even looks at puck possession or if they do they don't know how to value it. (One of the worst orgs. in sports in terms of anaytics).
I will say Phaneuf is an upgrade over Cowen and Boro at even strength and on the powerplay. Funny thing is though is this probably bumps Wiercioch out of the lineup who is likely better than Phaneuf.
In terms of $ and timeline it makes no sense. Ottawa is a bad team this year who won't make the playoffs and Phaneuf isn't changing that. Long story short they gave up futures for a player that is going to make them better this year and maybe next year while also decreasing their chances at getting a better draft pick. If they make the playoffs they sure as hell won't get past the first or second round.
And finally this trade makes it very difficult for Ottawa to compete in 3 years when most of their roster should be in their prime years. I feel bad for Karlsson whose generational career is being wasted on a crap team.
Even if he is a top 4D the trade is awful. In baseball terms this would be like making a trade to make a 78 Win team to a 80 Win team while taking up an additional 10% of payroll for 4 additional seasons knowing full well the contract is already a bad one and will be an albatross in 2 years.
Only benefit is Elisha Cuthbert living in Ottawa.
You overestimate Cowen lol. He's one of the worst defenceman in the NHL. Like to the point where I'd be surprised if he's still in the NHL in 3 years, he's that bad. Zero awareness and can't make a pass to save his life.
How do you find the high-res photo files? I've looked into doing something like this but find its fairly difficult to find the photos and somewhere that will print a photo that size.
Well he's certainly better than Cowen and Boro lol. Still an awful trade. Sure Ottawa traded crap but all of their contracts were expiring next year anyway, not to mention you could have bought out Cowen and Greening. The worst part though is Ottawa still isn't a contender or even a playoff team after this trade so the short term value you gain literally has no value.
Getting Lindberg and a 2nd is just icing for Toronto.
Don't get this trade from Ottawa's perspective. Phaneuf makes a bad team less bad while giving away futures and taking on a contract that is bad and will be horrible in 2-3 years.
I don't think anyone is realistically expecting Pillar to turn into an elite power hitter with the new swing. Even if the walk and strikeout numbers don't change much, there is still lots of room to improve as a hitter. If he can manage to hit .150 ISO or higher with a lot fewer popups he's going to be a very very good player.
I think if they were to sign him to a long term extension then they would have just done it now. By only signing the 2 year deal I think its much more likely Donaldson tests FA now.
