  1. Will be interesting if all of the RSN deals falling apart has a big effect on team spending in the next couple of years. I feel like it hasn't been talked about enough.
  2. If Ohtani stays with the Angels he deserves to lose and I wouldn't feel bad for him anymore. Talk about doing it to yourself...
  3. Dominguez and Volpe also exist although not sure Yankees would deal them.
  4. I think the Padres would get more than that, at least a position player prospect in there. Depends how they would value Manoah and Pearson though. I would think the Yankees would offer more than that.
  5. After Shapiro criticized AA for trading away all these prospects he's just going to turn around and do the same thing for 1 year of Soto? I do find that hard to believe.. Maybe Manoah for Soto straight up would work for the Jays if they think he's damaged goods/the relationship is beyond repair but if you're having to trade Monah plus 2 or 3 other prospects I just cant see it... There is some real question marks about this roster after 2025 and if you deplete the farm system and trade for Soto its going to be really difficult not to have to go through a rebuild.
  6. Waste of time signing any reliever this early.
  7. For whatever reason MLB compared to other sports has so much BS speculation in the media. In the NBA, Woj and Shams only tweet it out once a deal is done, none of this "Its believed that, this team has inquired about this player, The Jays have received calls on..." nonsense. Every team is going to call about every player, its nothing new. Even the Jays interest in Soto, I'm sure they called the Padres and then they said we would want this type of package and the Jays said thank you very much and hung up the phone. Yet in the media people are believing the Jays are going to just go all in on Soto if Ohtani doesn't sign in Toronto? I find that hard to believe...
  8. Jays already sold out all their seasons in the "club" seats in the 100 level. If the Jays win 90+ games they are going to get more revenue in tickets than they would with an 82 win Ohtani team 3 years from now anyways. No doubt Ohtani would bring in more $ in revenue from a marketing perspective, now is that worth even 40 Million over the lifetime of an Ohtani contract? I'm not so sure. Plus if Ohtani gets hurt he won't be worth much in extra revenue which is a big risk.
  9. Which of the 9s did you play? I got to play St George's last year which was really cool with having watched the Canadian Open the year before there. Course kicked my ass too.
  10. Speaking of mom banging I saw on twitter Dante Bichette banged another player's mom on the team and the Jays knew about it lol.
  11. I think its far overblown the impact a city has on a players preference. More so its a thing a player's family would care about more than the player as they are the one that spends the time in the city. Outside of the 10 or so off-days a player has in the home city they wake up at like 10am, walk to the ballpark and then leave at 11-midnight barely even noticing what city they are in.
  12. I think the argument is the Blue Jays as a whole come up with the decisions on who they should acquire. So Atkins himself isn't really doing anything special other than saying the team offers "x" years and "x" $. Obviously the GM is the one who id judged at the end on the decisions that were made but if the Jays internal process says player is worth "x" value then I'm not sure Atkins is going to stray too much outside of that. While the Belt/KK signings worked out quite well its not like they seemed like fantastic deals when the signings were announced. If anything they were slight overpays to what the consensus contracts those players were going to receive. But you are right, sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make and in the Jays case/Atkins era not signing JD, Bautista and Vladdy to long term contracts looks pretty smart. Even if Bo asked for something along the Tatis deal it was wise for the Jays FO to pass.
  13. Speaking of Goldschmidt, that would be nice bat to fit in the lineup. Obviously LHB is preferred but he's got power and might be available.
  14. I would hardly call 4/18M for Lind a flop lol. More so slightly overpaid, and he actually was pretty useful the last 2 years of his deal. Romero and Morrow weren't even bad deals at the time, they just got hurt which happens with pitchers. You could say FA never wanted to sign with the Blue Jays in the past because they were never competitive. After 2015/2016 at least players saw Toronto was a great baseball environment. If the FO were to convince Ohtani to sign here, now then I would say this FO has some convincing power.
  15. 1. Of course he is, a big reason why he's been so successful as a GM.... 2. I mean is that him though? The Jays FO used a collaborative approach so if one of the assistant GM's was the "GM" I don't think it would be much different. They make decisions together. I was speaking more to the fact almost all of the FA signings of Atkins tenure have been for market value. Tough to really gauge this anyways given free agents most of the time go to the highest bidder and there have been so few contract extensions singed for players before FA.
  16. I was talking more about current players on the roster signing contract extensions versus FA deals because usually FA are just going to go to the highest bidder. Atlanta singed Acuna, Albies, Riley, Olsen, Murphy, Strider and Harris all to deals that look very team friendly. Its too bad AA did leave in 2016 because I think he would have done very well here if you had guys in the FO telling him who to acquire and who to sign just because he is so good at negotiating.
  17. I'm actually a fan of Shapiro but it is ironic he scolded AA for trading all those prospects meanwhile the organization he ran screwed up by waiting too long to trade players off the roster. If they had traded JD, Stroman, Happ and Smoak back in 2017 they could have gotten a lot better prospects than they ended up getting. In the end they got back nothing of value for all 4 of those players. Meanwhile of the prospects the Jays traded in 2015 I think only Boyd really was worth decent value. But his 2-3 Win seasons from 17-19 wouldn't have done anything on those Jays teams anyways.
  18. Perhaps AA's biggest strength as a GM was his ability in contract negotiations. Even during his time in Toronto he did fantastic signing Bautista and Edwin to team friendly deals. The Yunell Escobar contract was highway robbery at the time. Then in Atlanta he convinced all their young stars to those Agent firing worthy deals. Even the Matt Olsen deal was really good. Not once has their been a contract that Atkins signed where you immediately thought "what a steal". The Gauseman contract has turned out great but it was likely the biggest contract he was offered at the time plus it was FA not an extension. The Grichuk contract and Berrios deal are the only 2 that really stick out to me where FA years were bought out? Grichuk's turned out badly and Berrios looks good.
  19. I think part of the reason why fans are angry with the current FO is the expectations they've had versus the results. They've had decent above average seasons but in addition to no playoff wins they haven't even sniffed a division title either. The payroll is amongst the highest in baseball which adds to those expectations and even though Atkins has done an above average job he is horrible with the media. A big part of being a GM isn't just moves on paper, its communicating with players and being involved in the media. Whenever he talks it comes off as so fake/corporate BS which I think a lot of fans hate. Even just looking at this year between the Anthony Bass/Monoah situations and the end of year presser there was a lot left to be desired of how he handled them. The one thing AA was really good at was speaking to the media, he always came off as sincere. He wouldn't really say much of anything when describing players but he at least had an authentic feel to him.
  20. Funny because Shaprio actually is pretty good with the media unlink Atkins who is an absolute tire fire and should never be in front of a mic. What he said isn't wrong though, you do need waves of young players to be a sustainable contender. And thats why this discussion is happening because it looks like this competitive window is closing pretty soon.
  21. Lyle Overpay had a wRC+ over 120 exactly one time in his career. You don't have to go back much further to see how tough it is for 1B prospects to become regulars (Rowdy Tellez, who only is 2 years older btw) especially ones with as little power as Horowitz. I don't think you should count on this guy to be anything more than depth and even then hes likely just replacement level.
  22. Of course systems take time, I'm the first to understand that. It probably takes 2 years to flush out bad coaches/bring new ones in and another 3 or so years for the prospects in the system to see the results of the changes. However its been 8 years since this FO has taken over which is my point. The Orioles FO turned over and started seeing results in 3-5 years. And while they've had some success with some international guys like Teo, Moreno, Gurriel and Kirk, the NA draft results are bleak. I will say the last couple of drafts look better and at least they have quite a few interesting bullpen arms. To be a sustainable winner you have to draft and develop well and while the Jays look to have a competitive team for this year and next, the lack of success in the draft makes the path to having a championship contender in 2026-2028 look pretty tough right now. To the point where a reset/rebuild might be on the horizon. Now watch them go out and sign Ohtani and make the outlook of the org. change in an instant lol.
  23. For a FO that preaches Drafting and Developing that pretty bad honestly. Especially when you factor in they went through a rebuild in 2018-2019. Horiwitz isn't even a regular on a contending team. 1 WAR 1B can be had every offseason for cheap. Not sure Schneider having a good 35 games is really an "insanely good signal". Its nice to see a success story but not sure its predictive of anything I actually really like Shapiro and think hes a great executive but being merely an average team for this big a market is an extreme disappointment. Hopefully the right coaches are in place and the Jays can improve in this area because just about every FO is "smart" now.
