I wonder what the Jays can get for Oh. That one extra cheap year of control has to be worth more than what the O’s got for Britton.

In reality the rentals aside from Happ and Donaldson aren't particularly good to begin with. We were hoping that we'd be able to utilize a half season of success and turn it into something but really guys like Clippard, Granderson, Loup, Axford, etc, are so fungible that it doesn't really matter how they do. Estrada was a bit of a wild card but would any contending team have him in their playoff rotation? Shatkins better get something good for Happ. Oh is another guy they should move but I fear the cheap option might make them hold on to him (hope I'm wrong). They really need to start selling guys with more than a year of control left.

The Mets would take a sandwich in return if the other team absorbs the entire contract. They make Rogers look like prime George Steinbrenner by comparison.

The market has taken a giant dump on first baseman and DH's. Smoak is a real good hitter but I don't think teams will value him enough to make a trade worthwhile.

I don't think $5m is too bad, but that 2020 option looks pretty bad. Yeah, I'd move him, even if the return is small. Likable guy but bad defender and league average hitter at best. If you can get something even remotely interesting for him, then go for it.

If Happ makes another start for the Jays this season that would be disappointing. Don’t wait long enough to hang yourself. I think Clippard will get moved because of his vetrin reputation (for a C level prospect at best) but Axford having any value would be a shock to me.

Domingo Santana is another one who they demoted. I'm not against targeting those types. If they fail they fail, but there's logic behind acquiring them and they can jump right into the bigs. Still think the lower level (high upside/high risk) types are the best to target for this team though.

Basing the front office's performance on wins and losses in 2017-18 when the team basically had a one year window (2016 - which the front office successfully took advantage of) is insane, though. Holding that opinion completely removes context. That's the definition of being uninformed. The average fan in that scenario is ignorant, as are any media who endorses that narrative. I'm not saying Shatkins has been perfect, but they've had to basically tread water at the big league level and rebuild at the same time. If it lead to a WC spot either last year or this year then at least it would look better, but it was still a low upside proposition. I wouldn't blame it on them when Rogers owns this year. Rogers is known to stagnate payroll when there is a window (2014) and increase payroll when the team has sucked for a couple of years (2004, 2013). Would not surprise me at all if after 3 straight years of high attendance and ratings that they wanted to keep the money coming in at the expense of baseball decisions. As I said, Shapiro has rebuilt a bunch of times. I'm sure he knows this team needs one, but either his hands are tied, or he's decided himself to try to do both to keep revenue up and rebuild at the same time (which makes him look better to his boss's). I'm guessing it's the former.

Who was going to trade for Martin or Tulo even a year ago? Their contracts especially in the back end were always going to be unmovable. We just had to hope they contributed so we could trade them while eating some money, but I don't think teams will take them now even if the Jays covered 90%. Sanchez had four years of control left and was making nothing (after 2016). Donaldson should have been traded in the off-season, that I agree with, but we don't know how involved Rogers is in this process. There was talk that bringing Jose back for a year was a Rogers call. Don't know how true that is, but would not surprise me. Shapiro rebuilt like 100 times in Cleveland. i think he knows how to do it.

Toronto has some dumb ass fans and media. Masai trades for a top 5 player in basketball and they are butt hurt because an overrated guy who loves Toronto was sent in return. Now Alex builds a team with a one year window, Shapiro actually succeeds in getting to the playoffs in that window, and now gets criticized because something everyone knew what going to happen ended up happening (decline after 2016). Insanity.

Phillies after Granderson and previously linked to Happ. I doubt Grandy by himself will net anything beyond a C level prospect, but maybe combining him with Happ and maybe a RP is more appealing.

I remember in 2005 (I think), Rob Babcock was the GM of the Raptors and he flat out said the team was going to stink and rebuild, and he lasted a few more months before he was canned. He got a lot of heat for that comment. Of course he sucked as a GM so that was another blemish for him. Times have changed since then, maybe, but I don't blame any front office in Toronto for being tight lipped about their plans. Corporate owners who only care about bottom line/optics, and fans who are insufferable on social media. Just let the front office do their thing and we'll see what the end result is.

That's how Gibbons uses his pen for some reason. Everyone has an assigned inning/role. It wouldn't be a big deal if Osuna was still out there, but taking Oh out after 6 pitches to bring in Clippard just for assigned role purposes is stupid as hell. It's 2018, managers should be able to get creative, but Gibbons is old school like that.

If the Yankees become a super team again, interest will rise. Maybe not like the late 90's, but the Yankees can bring casuals and get talk shows to talk about baseball. I think Manfred is right to some degree. Fans (the casual ones he wants to attract) don't care about parity. They care about superstars. They care about teams that are so good that they become must-see. They also like a good story, as the Cubs WS run had a lot of fan interest from what I remember. I'm not sure how he can fix the game to make it more appealing to a younger, mainstream audience. He has a really tough road ahead. I didn't mind the Facebook stuff, at least that's some attempt, but he needs to stop toying with the on field rules. No rule change or pace of play change is going to attract more viewers.

Yeah I think we have to prepare for something like McKinney and a low minors lotto ticket from the Yankees, or equivalent from another team. Rentals are not highly valued anymore.

I'd prefer Frazier over their pitching prospects too, but if Cashman is trying to "push him" in trades, then I'm kinda reluctant now. Cashman never trades good prospects. He usually trades the overhyped ones.
