  1. Ryan Tepera it is.
  2. Jeter making moves.
  3. So he can catch 50 games behind Jansen and then be able to cover a s***** 3B when the team already has Drury, Diaz, and eventually Vlad to fill that spot. On a team with no intention of competing. The other alternative is to trade him, get a lotto ticket or two, and give him a chance to start on a contender. I’m sure Martin loved sitting on his ass all september but if he still thinks he can start then we’d be doing him a favor while opening up playing time for others and maybe getting an asset back. I’d take a Samad Taylor type for Martin and hope he turns into something.
  4. Well if it's Morales for Desmond and Gray, then I don't think Rockies fans would consider it a Vernon type of trade. It would be like if the Jays traded Wells and Morrow to the Angels for Napoli, or something like that. Gray would be the intriguing wild card piece that either could turn out to be really good or continue along the path that he's on (which is still pretty good). I don't think the Rox would trade Gray just to save $28m over three years, but who knows what the hell that front office would do.
  5. If you're moving him, it's entirely to a) free up the starting catcher spot for Jansen, get any assets you can for someone who isn't going to yield draft compensation after the year, and c) do a veteran player a favor by trading him to a contender where he could start (rather than back up a rookie on a rebuilding team). If Houston offers a couple of low minors types who would rank 20-30 in our system and we have to eat up $15m, then do it. Why wouldn't you? Keeping Martin isn't going to help us get to the playoffs, and using him as a backup is a slap in the face to him. Not sure why people are so defensive about a trade like that. Don't give him away for s***, but a trade while eating some money is not a bad thing.
  6. Desmond has a $2m buyout, so it's really 3/40 for him, plus he will get a NTC if he's traded. Even if the Rox take Morales, that leaves the Jays on the hook for 3/28 on a really s***** player. If it means getting Gray for nothing then you have to consider it considering where the Jays are with SPs, but that's a lot of dead weight money.
  7. Yeah, Dombrowski will be remembered fondly as a Red Sox exec especially if he wins a title, but if there’s one guy I expect to completely kill the Sox by the time the Jays are ready to contend, it’s him.
  8. Price winning a playoff game as a starter is about to happen. Where's Ryan Goins when you need him?
  9. Manfred probably loving the thought of Red Sox/Dodgers.
  10. This is Boston's year, unfortunately. Those Mofo's are unbeatable.
  11. After what happened at the deadline this year, you think Shatkins wants to have a rental to trade at the deadline? Unless we get Gray (Sonny) for practically nothing, I'd pass. Now if we're talking about Gray (Jon), then that's a different story.
  12. Wait, Baldelli works for the Rays? Ok, so either Espada or Baldelli works for me. Poach the Rays coaching pool too.
  13. Morales will have to be DFA’d and no team is going to take even part of his salary. Some team will sign him to the minimum once he’s released but anything more is asking for too much. He’s a replacement level league average bat who can’t play a position or run. Martin will def have value somewhere but the Jays will have to eat up a large chunk. The Yanks traded McCann and ate up a small part of his remaining money when Sanchez was ready so it’s not like smart GMs haven’t done it.
  14. I'd like to poach some coaches from the Astros org. They seem to be ahead of the curve in a lot of areas. Joe Espada is my pick.
  15. The one aspect of trading Martin that might need to be considered is that trading him would be doing him a favor. I'm sure he doesn't want to catch 50 games a year behind Jansen if he still considers himself a starting catcher, and the new manager may not be as friendly as Gibby when it comes to playing him in the infield. The guy just spent an entire month on the bench when he was apparently healthy. You don't do that to players you want to keep around. I don't mind keeping Martin to mentor Jansen (and even Tulo to mentor Bo), but the org may not want that distraction and doing good by veteran players is usually seen as a good thing.
  16. Playoff Price is amazing.
  17. Yeah seriously I don’t mind a bullpen game every now and then over the course of a long season but seeing it so often in the playoffs is not fun to watch. Watching an “old school” ace like Verlander is so much more appealing as a viewer than 1-2 inning appearances for 7 different guys.
  18. Pearson will be monitored very closely in 2019 due to missing practically all of 2018. I think earliest for him is mid-2020, best case. If he's a reliever, then obviously all bets are off, but no way Shatkins turns him into one this soon.
  19. Yeah, Shatkins has to make sure we don't "Mike Trout" Vlad's time here. Make sure this team is ready to contend by 2020. I want to see six competitive years with that beast in the lineup.
  20. Martin just spent all of Sept riding the bench despite being healthy. He's not going to be back next year. There are at least a small handful of teams that could be upgraded with him as starting catcher. Jays will still need to eat up money but unless he's ready to play 50 games a year as a back up in 2019, I see no other real alternative. Now if he wants to be a back up and mentor Jansen, then that's a different story. Especially if Maile has actual trade value, then the Jays might be better off from an asset standpoint to do it like that. I just feel like the Jays will trade Martin to do him a favor.
  21. I'd expect it to be pretty low in 2019 considering the team has no plans on contending and Shapiro doesn't like free agency anyway. They'll also be giving playing time to a lot of pre-arb and non expensive arb players. I think $130m is reasonable, but wouldn't surprise me if it's lower, especially if they decide to trade Smoak and Pillar.
  22. He had options this year, don't know about next year. Eh, I'd keep him. Mid-90's FB, gets GB's, strikes out a good amount. I could see him having a surprise 1.0 WAR season out of no where and then disappearing a year later. Or he could flame out completely. Relievers in a nutshell. Cost is low enough to justify keeping him if they decide to go that route.
  23. Combined WAR of JD, Bautista, Edwin, Tulo, and Martin: 2015: 24.3 2016: 17.9 2017: 9.0 2018: 3.9 If only Shapiro extended these guys to long-term deals, or doubled down to add more expensive vets at the expense of prospects. Then we'd be in much better shape.
  24. In Edwin's prime he was striking out about 15% of the time. He was making hard contact, drawing walks, and not striking out. For a 40 HR slugger, that's damn good. Stanton is striking out 30% of the time. He just had a .333 BABIP season and still saw a huge drop in performance. They have some similarities, but the K's and contact rates are huge. Stanton strikes out double the amount Edwin did in his prime. Edwin's offensive profile seemed much more likely to age gracefully than Stanton's does. Stanton looks like an old man skills player. At age 29, I don't think he has many more great years in him.
  25. Well Bautista and Edwin aged pretty well (by post PED standards) due to high walks and modest k%. I think those types would age a bit more gracefully. Stanton has a decent walk rate but nothing great, and his K's won't be going down any time soon. I'm not saying he'll fall off tomorrow, but 9 years is a long time. If he's still a surplus value player for half of those years, I'd be shocked.
