And losing Ortiz is going to hurt, as nobody can really replace him--and don't assume EE signs with Boston. Other teams are expected to be in the mix along with the Jays, and the Pomeranz deal will drain any funds that could go for EE, as he's arb eligible for 2 more years and expected to command a large raise with his breakout if he keeps it up. Remember, Boston's payroll for next season after the Pomeranz deal is already approaching $200M projected (with benefits), limiting flexibility. This isn't the Dodgers--Boston has limits, and may actually cut payroll next year to offset the overspending this season on Ortiz's retirement. And of course, JBJ, Betts and Bogaerts begin to get expensive next year..
And Boston's farm is hardly stocked--after Moncada, Devers and Benintendi, there are significant question marks, with many of their farm guys projected as org. depth. Most notably, they have very little pitching depth above A+ ball.. and Espinoza being dealt thins it even more.
