  1. Maybe he will announce he has deferred the rest of his salary for this year, so we can afford another bat?? Most likely it has to do with the Tshirts he was selling for his foundation.
  2. AHAH. AA "Yeah, thats fair. We scouted The Player, we talked with The Player, but at the end of the day Dollars and Term just didnt line up for us" Real meaning: When we passed around the communion plate, Buerhle, Bautista, Reyes, EE, didn't put in enough money to match the Reds' offer.
  3. I guess Bautista has found his HR Contest pitcher for the AL. Should win it easily. So f***ing frustrating. HR's and Walks are something that I cannot stand watching. As has been touched on here, he's not a terrible pitcher, and may be unlucky...but he was heralded as the finishing top of the rotation piece we needed. That he is not. And its infuriating. What makes it worse is his excuses. I guess you have to give him credit for facing the media after bad outings and taking the blame (sort of), but hearing "The Pitch this...The Pitch that...". Seriously, shut the f*** up and say you threw bad hittable pitches up in the zone and you got rocked. No one wants to hear about capricious animals and other nonsense.
  4. UPDATE. Halfway Point of the season. 81 GP. Jays are 45-36, .556, 1st Place 2.0 Games Ahead the Orioles in the AL East. Current Pace: 90 Wins. Pythagorean W-L R:385 RA 349 pW% = .549 pW = 88.92 pL = 73.07 89-73. Looks like we're OVER performing our pythagorean record. As for the prediction contest: Northof49, sAAviour, and theblujay all predicted 90 wins. 5. but Morosi hears “strong indications” that the Cubs would deal Samardzija for a package highlighted by right-hander Aaron Sanchez, left-hander Daniel Norris and center fielder Dalton Pompey. Under the category of No s*** Sherlock.
  6. If AA said last week that discussions were picking up, and he was looking at infielders...now would be a good time to make a deal. Of course, the price probably went up with Lawrie's injury. Have they given a timeframe yet? Also, im surprised that Dan Johnson wasnt called up. He can play third, and his splits are somewhat reverse.
  7. Peter Gammons ‏@pgammo 5m Jose Bautista has hamstring strain, so he'll be back soon
  8. The Rays model is not really sustainable until they start drafting players who become star major leaguers. Theres only so much that you can trade your pre-arb or pre-FA guys, get 1-2 prospects for say a Shields, and hope to keep contending. Assuming the hit rate is 33% on these prospects, unless they can draft and develop their own players, like they did up until the late 2000's, they wont have enough talent to keep competing with the big spending teams.
  9. Hmm, you both may be right about Ricky not being insured, and $100M+ only being the ones worth insuring... but I've also read recent articles of players being gone for half a season or a bit over that and that portion being insured, and that was on a sub-50M total deal. Either way, its an interesting question, and probably nothing that Beeston or AA would speak to.
  10. Vent all you want, things could be worse. 6 Years ago today, the Jays fired Gibbons and brought back Cito.
  11. News came out yesterday about Ricky having knee surgery and missing the rest of the season. If this were a Red Sox or Yankees board, I wouldn't be posting this, since this is basically a nickels and dimes question...but given the fact that AA had to pass the hat around to potentially sign Ervin Santana, I believe the question is valid, and could mean the difference between acquiring certain players at the deadline, or not acquiring them due to monetary concerns on Rogers' end. Does anyone know if Insurance covers Ricky's contract this season, and if we can get a portion of that salary back? He's making $7.5mil. Since theres more than half of the season left, could the JAys recoup ~$4M and stick that to Lloyds of London, or whomever insures this stuff??? Anyone familiar with how this stuff works?
  12. Meaning when Rasmus comes back.
  13. Delabar could be DL'd to figure out whatever is wrong with him. If Jenkins goes down, and you really don't know what youre getting from Santos...there are 2 wildcards in there with Delabar and Santos, who are supposed to be your power righties.
  14. Who is the 4th OF right now then? Tolleson isnt it? I think when Rasmus returns, Gose stays, and Jenkins is sent down.
  15. Most likely GCL, per jaysjournal. Isnt that where most high school signees start?
  16. If SRF was going to sign at slot, so early in the process, aren't him and his "people" idiots for putting it out there that he may attend FSU. Theres no real use in bluffing pre-draft, if you really are intent on signing, since it will just cause you to slide...so basically by putting it out there that he'd be a hard sign because of the FSU commit, when, in fact, he clearly wasnt...they cost themselves $1M?? Seems stupid to me.
  17. I'd love Cashner, or even Ross from the Padres. I think Cashner would be pretty good even in the AL east and RC, with his park-adjusted HR rate. The Padres are in no-mans land, with the guys who were prospects from their last rebuild (Grandal, Alonso, Headley), struggling, and guys like Headley and Quentin coming up on free agency in the next offseason or two, so they should start moving guys like Cashner. Their system is pretty good, but most guys are at least a few years away (Fried, Hedges), so supplementing with a Sanchez and/or others in his ilk, would probably best for SD. There's been a lot of talk about rentals, which seems contrary to everything AA has preached. I'd prefer to give up a little more to get someone like Cashner who has controllability and upside.
  18. As a strategic decision, do they not announce these bonuses until after the signing period? ie. if player A has leverage, and knows that player B has leverage and has signed for under-slot, they could hold out for more money knowing that the team has banked some savings.
  19. Surprised that TD'A struggled so much, especially from the defensive end. Not surprised they sent him down to work things out. He had a concussion too I think , and was recovering from that. He's only 25, so theres time, and if he's not elite, he should get his D back to the point where he can stick as at least as a platoon type guy. Of course, he was supposed to be elite, so definitely a disappointment on the Mets part at this point. If D'Arnaud doesnt pan out, that trade, as it was originally constituted (ie. the deals to get Gose aside), looks terrible from the Jays point of view. Drabek may never make it back after a second TJ surgery, and even if he does, looks like he will always have make up and command concerns. Michael Taylor is pretty much a AAAA guy now. He was traded for Brett Wallace, who is in the same boat as a AAAA flamed out prospect. Luckily the Jays still have Gose who is contributing at the Major League level as the everyday CF in Rasmus' absence.
  20. Rasmussen was sent down, Korecky was brought up. Day later Korecky was sent down, Stroman was brought up. 2 days later Hendriks was sent down. 1 day later Jenkins was called up. I think Wagner wouldve gotten the call, but he got hurt over the weekend.
  21. I dont think Melky signs for 3 years. Given his age, that puts him in no-man's land when its time for his next contract, at age 33. Its either 4+, so it counts as his 1 huge contract through his prime...or shorter than 3, so he can get further away from the PED issue, put up good numbers, and get back out there still in his prime.
  22. From the AA interview yesterday he said that the $ would be there for both Melky and Rasmus extensions. With Gose playing well (SSS, I know), and with the comps out there for a player like Rasmus, I predict that we'll let him walk as opposed to paying $13-16M AAV over 5-7years for a player who would really hit 7th or 8th in our lineup how its currently constructed. I do however, predict that Melky will be back. He's rebounded from his tumor plagued season last year, and looks like a totally different player in the field and at the plate. If you buy into the 'fit' and 'clubhouse vibe' thing, you could say he is a big part of the dominican/latin contingent that looks like theyre always having fun on the bench. So...all that being said, LFer going into his age 30 season, previous PED usage, has shown that he can flat out hit, play at least an average Left Field...What would an extension cost? I'd say 4-Years 50Mil? If that were the extension who's leaving money on the table there? Thoughts?
  23. Ah ok, I knew there was some stipulation re: options/age/time since debut. Usually when someone goes on optional waivers, you can't remove him from the roster (same as post-trade deadline waivers). The previously posted Tweet makes more sense now, as to that being the reason he was DFA'd. I'll always have Bobby Korecky to thank for helping me to understand the process.
  24. 1. Korecky given his age is out of options, so it wasnt optional waivers. Thats why he was DFA'd, so he could go on 'outright' waivers, and if he clears, he'll be 'outrighted' to AAA Buffalo. 2. They've announced Stroman will start Saturday 3. Gibbons said post-game that Hendricks should slide into his regular start next week (so he'd get skipped this turn with the offday)...but was wishywashy and said things were yet to be decided 4. Questions are whether or not they do a 6-man rotation. Right now looks like: Sat - Stroman (5 Days rest) Sun - Buehrle (Regular Start) Mon - OFF Tues - Hutch (7 Days Rest) Wed - Dickey(5 Days Rest) Thurs - Happ (5 Days Rest) Fri - Stroman (5 Days Rest) Sat - Buehrle (5 Days Rest) Sun - Hendriks (10 Days Rest) Mon - Hutch (5 Days Rest) OR they'd slide Hendriks into that Fri - Stroman start, and send Stroman back down. OR skip/send down Hendriks, and have Hutch pitch Sunday on regular rest...which I would think negates the whole point of the Stroman call-up in the first place, if its just a 1-time start for him and just a 1-time extra rest thing for Hutch. of course...they will probably just trade for Shields, and all this planning will go to s***.
  25. Its very weird. If they needed a RP for the short term, they couldve sent down Rasmussen and brought up Stroman, because he could be used out of the pen as today is his start day anyways, so he's rested. If they were bringing him up to start, why would they skip his start this turn. I think either its a trade, or they're lining him up with someone (Hendricks), and using Korecky until that turn comes around, or another RP is called up.
