We lost Tony an over-aggressive slide breaking up a double play. Then Ernie went down. Living in the states, I'd get up early every morning to watch the news before school for the score. Every time I'd be in a pissed off mood getting on the bus. That last weekend, the games were on national TV both saturday and sunday (10/3 and 10/4), so I was able to be tortured live. Key pitched a gem that last game but old Kirk hit that homer late and we lost 1-0. Doyle Alexander (who we had traded to the Braves the year prior for Duane Ward) killed us. Went like 10-0 after the trade deadline.
The worst part of all of it was knowing we could have beaten the Twins. The Cards I wasn't as certain, but I remember watching the Twins win in five, ripped that should have been us.
McGriff/Fielder were the DH, Gruber/Rance at 3B, Lee/Liriano at 2B. Plenty of platoons back then. Can't remember who platooned with Whitt. It wasn't Buck, who I believe retired in '86. Don't think Borders came up until '89, but I'm getting old.
