While I get the "second leadoff hitter when turning the line-up over" thing, I just don't want Martin to be getting fewer at-bats than Pillar/Tolleson/Goins/Izturis, which is the end result of batting him 9th. Also, no Bautista as others have mentioned.

He's a below average fielder in right, and he's 31 now. I always sort of got the impression that he was a good fielder, and he definitely has a great arm, but looking at the numbers right now, he's generally negative (-5.5 career UZR, 1 positive UZR year in the past 6, last season actually...). http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=5930&position=OF#fielding Another guy I wouldn't mind on a short term deal, but wouldn't really want him for a longer contract. O's are smart to not want to go 4 years with him.

For me, it's mostly a durability issue, coupled with the fact that he's already a below average fielder at arguably the easiest position in baseball. I don't really relish a 1 tool player (average) under contract when he's likely going to be forced to the DH role in the next year or two. 3/39 is as high as I go for Melky.
