  1. Ohtani is the BTS of baseball (Korean boy band, not BJMB poster). His innocence, looks and charm will attract all the ladies. But he doesn't have the effeminate part of BTS (Korean band nor BJMB poster) which will still keep all the old school baseball fans on board. Finally, add in the odd, slightly OCD behaviour he has around baseball and training and that will attract all the young stat nerds and other weirdos that gravitate towards baseball. Ohtani is basically like Trevor Bauer except not ugly, not creepy (to our knowledge) and doesn't know enough English words to say something that will offend someone. Basically Ohtani is the perfect sponsorship icon and spokesman for the MLB. That's why he is getting this deal.
  2. I wonder how this ties in to team win projections because IIRC the Fangraphs projection was around 90 for the Jays but with this kind of projection for the hitters I would think it's close to 100.
  3. Society has challenged the real ages of athletes like Albert Pujols and Serge Ibaka because they come from "questionable locations" but we're just gonna let it slide that this dude is really 25?
  4. If he's back by September then this is an excellent deal for the Jays. Basically like picking up an arm at the trade deadline for a playoff run without having to give anyone up.
  5. Instead of crying like a bunch of babies, will you guys just Mandela Effect Halladay's way into a Jays hat? Terminator's already half way there thinking he's in a Phillies hat. We are in the age of the internet. 99% of facts are what people believe. If you ask the average baseball fan out of New York or Boston or something, 99.9% chance they are going to say Halladay is in as a Jay. The only ones who know otherwise are all on this board, plus a few Phillies fans. Even people who literally just visited Cooperstown are going to say Halladay is in a Jays hat if they were interviewed on their way out. I'll get it started. There are two players in the Hall of Fame with the Blue Jays hat on: Roberto Alomar and Roy Halladay.
  6. Always been a fan of getting guys like this who can rip up the base paths the way he does. I wonder if his defense is any good? That 2022 season looks interesting. Major power spike at AAA. I guessing altitude-aided like Denver would be. If this guy does have good defense, I can see him having use on the roster with the way it's constructed. Kirk gets on base late innings in a tight game, Bernard pinch runs for him. Varsho takes over catching and Bernard in LF. One of those times where you can pinch run without taking too much of a penalty if your quest to get the run fails.
  7. I can agree with this argument.
  8. The Jays were unquestionably the best team for a 10 year period from the early 80's to 90's. I don't know how many teams outside of the Yankees have put up 11 straight winning seasons in MLB's long history but my guess is not a lot. They've had an extreme lack of representation in the HOF. Until now it's been Alomar and a few guys with cups of coffee at the end of their career. McGriff is a good addition. Stieb would complete it. I know Stieb is a tier below Brown, Wells and Pettitte career wise so it will be an uphill battle for him. But I think he had a better peak than those guys.
  9. David Wells: 239-157, 2,201 K, hungover perfect game, ALCS MVP, 10-5, 3.17 ERA in playoffs Kevin Brown: 211-144, 2,397 Ks, 5-5, 4.19 ERA in playoffs If we are talking about these pitchers, they should at least both be in the conversation about equally. But when it comes to people sticking up for pitchers, Brown is always top of mind and Wells complete ignored. Why? Because Brown is one of the first players you see not in the HOF when sorting by WAR? There's more to it than that IMO. 10 years ago I would have said David Wells is not a Hall of Famer. But he should have at least stuck around like Kent and Vizquel. With Baines getting in which is a joke, and with McGriff getting in and no one is complaining about it (rightfully so IMO), why not Wells? He's got more WAR than McGriff does. I guess I'm playing Devil's Advocate too. If everyone was talking about Wells and not Brown, I'd be sticking up for Brown more.
  10. Connor has some interesting analogies. It wasn't a crowded bar, this was his home with minimal possible targets. Even if the tobacco was meant for the fish tank and the baby leapt in front of it like Superman to take the hit instead of his pet, it's still a pretty low move. Now the part I agree with is that evidence should be corroborated before punishment doled out but I and everyone else should be assuming that anyways.
  11. It's basic human psychology. Jumping on a bandwagon instead of thinking for yourself. It's prevalent in all facets of society. Without it, I wouldn't be able to load up on some ******** penny stock, wait 5 years for something to happen, then cash out a 7-digit figure. I'm fine with it.
  12. Kenny Lofton will always be the player who I think got snubbed the most that I saw play in my lifetime. One and done, not even any remote consideration unlike guys like Kent. David Wells the most snubbed pitcher. Yeah Brown has more Fangraphs WAR but otherwise their stats are pretty comparable and Wells has the playoff heroics to fall back on. I think those three guys and Stieb will get voted in one day by the Veteran's Committee.
  13. I don't have a problem giving players a pity vote when you 100% know they won't have a chance and you aren't sacrificing someone you think is more deserving to do so.
  14. This is clearly a false flag set up by the mods to gain sympathy and increase donations here.
  15. Hey well you are talking to a guy who finds this to be entertaining, high quality music:
  16. Re: Challenge system. They also need a few years to work out the kinks IIRC. It should be the other way around. The roboumps call it but the umpire and/or teams reserve the right to overturn or challenge an obviously glitchy or wrong call. I honestly don't see how the union would have a problem with this. Literally taking the worst/hardest/most dangerous part of the job out of their hands and leaving it to machines. The farmer is tilling the land with a tractor instead of by hand. But you still need the farmer.
  17. Tool is a bit of an interesting case. It's a gateway that could go either way. I personally find Tool's music boring and overrated and Maynard James Keenan to be the absolute biggest douche in the rock world outside of actual predators. But not all Tool fans are automatic toilet drinkers. Some of them can be. Knowing Tool at least means the person probably has some basic knowledge of actual bands and music. Let's just put that one as a warning sign but nothing definitive can be concluded.
  18. I think we're going to see a lot of these type of comments coming from Acuna. My guess is that he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder from the contract, sort of like how Bautista did when he wanted his ridiculous extension. If you're getting paid $300 million from your club, you shut up and come to work lol. If you feel you've been underpaid, you're going to speak up and know you can get away with it. Or hope the disruption causes a rift which ends up with you going elsewhere and getting a sweet extension in the process. Someone in Acuna's position coming back from injury knows damn well why he hasn't been "invited" to participate.
  19. What I can say about Romano just by looking at him is that he must either have the absolute best or absolute worst taste in music.
  20. Look, the mods took care of it so I don't want to extend this conversation any more than it has to, but hopefully the value of my post is seen and is left up as a final word. The regulars here know that I lean to the right politically. I'm not down with woke culture or whatever and not particularly sensitive. But I think I represent a pretty fair line in the sand where if you've crossed it, you said something worthy of general condemnation. I'm a conversative. I wish more people would see the way I see the world and therefore become conservative. Especially in POC communities where I know there are a ton of people who hold generally conservative values (personal responsibility type of values). You know how NOT to grow the conservative community? By making unfounded generalizations about a group of people and generally acting like an *******. And then going around like a whiny fascist throwing a tantrum after isolating people (not saying connor or anyone here has done this, but in general there are people like this out there who have). Behave like a decent person and more people will think like you. I am a conservative and I want us to win and I'm telling you our best shot at doing so. Yeah this forum is a cesspool and we all say mean things to each other because it's fun (especially dunking on Jim). But I have a feeling you take this part of your attitude to real life as well. If 80% of NFL players are bankrupt after two years maybe it has more to do with them being knocked on the head having CTE, unable to pay bills from other medical costs resulting from their football careers, and not having access to any sort of pension because they didn't meet the playing time threshold. Rather than skin colour. That is, if your numbers are even remotely accurate. As an important secondary point, I recall you getting railroaded for multiple pages on something about postseason play and how teams need big time sluggers a few days ago. The general conclusion was that you were pulling ideas out of your ass based on a tiny bit of anecdotal evidence. This type of analysis that you do likely led you down the same path as this thug post.
  21. I wasn't speaking to you personally when pointing that out...
  22. How fast this thread moved from players being out of shape and unsustainable should they sign a long term contract to people being slightly worried that no long term deals have been signed. Now is not the time to do extend them. Not with 13 year contracts being the norm. My bet is that the big spenders will have blown their loads and the market will have come down a bit before the key players test free agency.
  23. Makes me think minor leaguers are paid too much after looking at that.
  24. And 60 years later they named a style of music after him.
