  1. I don't think I would count 2013 as a below average year for Melky. I have no material statistical data to support this, but I'm pretty sure hitting .279 and posting a .682 OPS playing 88 games with a tumour on your spine is above average for those playing with that condition. There's no one to compare him too, because when you can hardly run and it hurts to sit down on a couch you generally don't play baseball. I don't think people who have not suffered back pain truly understand the pain he endured while playing.
  2. I forget what the playoffs feel like. Many posters have never experienced the playoffs because they are too young. You always have a shot if you make the playoffs....I would consider making the playoffs a huge successful season even if they lost out right away....I know some would disagree. I can understand either opinion. It just depends on your personality.
  3. I'm entirely confused with your post..why are you attaching free agents with teams...lol. Boston's rotation as it stands is Buchholz, Kelly, Webster, De La Rosa, Workman. Adding Lester doesn't make it a great rotation. Scherzer to NYY would make a nice rotation, but the injury worries for both Tanaka and Pineda are high. Adding a number 3 pitcher to a team with a bunch of number 3s doesn't really change anything. Laffey? Tampa probably has the best rotation in the division, but is lacking on offense.
  4. well yeah...the starting staff wouldn't scare too many post season teams...but really I would be happy just to make the post season..or even be within 1 game of the post season going into the final 7 games with a shot to make the playoffs..lol
  5. Hutch, stro, buehrle and dickey all had fip's below 4 last year. Happ is not great, but a decent number 5. You're right, looking around the AL east with all the dominant starting staff's we have zero hope of winning without another quality starter...oh wait...the rest of the AL East has crappy starting pitching....maybe we can win with mediocre starting pitching and great offense. The rest of the division has mediocre starting pitching.
  6. AA is using the Adam wainwright approach to the bullpen. All top young starting prospects will be considered for the bullpen this year...Castro, Osuna, Norris, Sanchez....to compliment Loup, Redmond, Cecil, Estrada and Delabar.
  7. way to stay positive bill..lol.
  8. seriously...they just signed Stanton to a ridiculous deal...and they are going to offer the pitching equivalent chump change. Boras would have a good laugh over that one.
  9. yeah that surprised me....the bullpen is going to be the young guys.
  10. There are a lot of arbitrary numbers associated with WAR that are not based on mathematical proofs. WAR definitely is not an exact science or without error. That said, Donaldson hits just as well as pablo, runs better and plays better defense.....the eye test works just as good as advanced statistics.
  11. Isn't he giving up 2 FA years? I thought he was a free agent in 2019.
  12. you just gave all the reasons why you get an offensive player in left. It's not hard to play. There are much fewer opportunities for a player to make a difference in a game. You can literally go several games where all plays to left will be routine. It's not like Melky plays catcher or short stop. There's a reason Hanley is playing left field.
  13. Let's go Ticats!...oops...wrong forum..lol
  14. he's versatile and the advanced statistics say he is an average defender. He's a character guy who gets on base. There's no reason you can't sign him and find room for him in buffalo if Travis does get the nod with the big club out of spring training.
  15. wow....lay off the crack..I think that's a bit of an overpay for Altuve..lol.
  16. he's got a decent fastball. He could actually be a good reliever. So many starters who have one good pitch, but not 3 decent pitches let their ego get in the way of transitioning to a bullpen role where they will thrive. Sanchez has way more upside. When is he going to be ready? Who knows. He showed signs of it last year in relief. Will that transition to him as a starter. Clearly it's not apples to apples...being a reliever and a starter are a different ball game, but I don't put the stock in minor league numbers that some do. If Sanchez comes to camp and looks good being stretched out he's in the rotation and happ goes to the bullpen. I don't need to see the kid dominate AAA before seeing him in the majors.
  17. it's not case closed...it's your opinion. You are entitled to it. Others may disagree.
  18. where did I say that? You said you need one or two good to very good arms. I think you need three or four. I'm not saying sign a miller or Robertson for 10+ mil. I'm saying get a couple guys with experience like Grilli to go with a the guys you have or the starters you think will convert and a collection of pretty good arms should sort it out so a few of them can work the back end of games.
  19. yeah...cause bullpen arms never get injured...
  20. those that feel the rotation is fine feel that hutch, stro, dickey and buehrle will all be sub 4 ERA guys. That leaves a spot for Norris or Sanchez to see if they can join the other group. Happ is a fallback and a mid season trade is possible to sort it out if things don't work out. Ideally yeah...one more starter. I'd look to Liriano myself.
  21. we have enough offense if everyone stays healthy. If Jose and reyes went down our offense would not look so hot. Filling either a 2nd baseman or leftfielder with a quality major league player is still important.
  22. Grilli 2 years 7 mil...go do it. I would love to have Morrow back in a bullpen role if he would get out of the way of his ego and realize he's not a starter anymore.
  23. You may be right. One guy I would go get right away that isn't going to break the bank is Grilli. He did fairly well throwing to Martin in the past. We need to address the bullpen. This is what let the team down more than anything last year, but the most difficult to address because you never know what you're going to get from year to year. I'd roll the dice and add him because I dont' think it's going to cost you very much.
  24. his defensive numbers couldn't help but be terrible in 2013 as he had a tumor on his spine and couldn't move. He was much better in 2014 and won't be as bad as he was in 2013 until he's 45 years old. That's how he was moving in 2013..as a 45 year old dude. Melk man will hit till he is 40...he's a pure hitter and power has never been his game.
  25. I wish no ill will for Brett. I hope in two years, he is right there with Donaldson. It's hard to argue 4 years of control vs 3 especially with the injury issues Brett has had. I hope he can stay healthy and become the player I thought he would be.
