    Tony Fernandez was the first Blue Jay to use the gadgets. He used to keep a locker full of them.

    Sounds like Bull Durham where the announcer worked from home stadium. All we need is somebody to tap the sticks to make it sound like a hit every now and then.

    Injuries were more catastrophic and career-ending for pitchers. Training in general was poor/non existent.

    That's true, and if I remember correctly Pittsburgh carried an 8 man staff for a bit. Platoons ran defense like crazy so more position players were needed. Back in the mid 80's we platooned 3b, left field, dh and catcher. And in terms of offence, a walk was treated like an insult. I remember Damaso Garcia swinging at balls in the dirt because he wanted a pitch to hit.

    I had the surgery on my wrist. The impingement was considered surgery but was just a local.

    I know an impingement is not the biggest deal but it qualifies as surgery with much easier recovery.

    anyone heard anything about Pearson? I watched some of the videos and for the few pitches he threw it looked okay, hitting the catcher glove cleanly. I also watched Kikuchi and paid more attention to where the catcher was setting up. He seemed to have to work a little harder.

    Dang I hope Kikuchi's got it. White had surgery and won't be ready. We're really short on 5th starter.

    from a fan stand point, I'd say the drive of 85 may have been bigger with fans than the 2 world series appearances. Then the strike that followed just destroyed the spirit. We used to be good for a sell-out any day.

    He didn't get a lot of saves. Wasn't very good as a closer. He wasn't bad at middle relief.

    Betting on sports was always a guaranteed loss for me so I just don't do it. For those who do -- fine. This is live and let live as far as I see. Government regulation just isn't necessary.

    The city was going crazy -- a lot of people followed the team who were not usual baseball fans. The starters were extremely reliable. The offence worked wonders. The only poor position was 1b Willie Upshaw. It should have been Fielder. But otherwise that team was fun to watch.

    It's one of the most memorable plays to me. Pretty much ended his career and it was at great personal risk to himself but he did it.

    I'm thinking we may call for Tiedemann to be 5th starter. The first year Jimmy Key made the team (as the only lefty reliever) some of us were calling on him to be a starter. He was good. I'm thinking Tiedemann may be better than Kikuchi and others.

    Good point. Yes for now out of spring training. I'm thinking this year's Greg Bird.

    On a different note: which non-roster player do you think will be the candidate that we all think should make the 26-man roster? I'm going to go with Tiedemann as a pitcher and Capra as a bat.

    Then by this argument, why not let the players wear whichever uniform type they want? Why should they be limited?? If Bo wants to wear a red shirt while the rest wear white, what does that impact?

    True, but the definition of "super hyped" started to stretch a lot. Gretzky, Crosby and McDavid are superstars and players of the age, but Victor Mete at 98? Not quite.

    There's a few articles out there about the numbers and traditions. To some people it matters. I don't pretend to be anywhere near majority opinion on this but I do think that baseball needs to look at why fans are fans.

    Fair enough G -- always found that Stroman may be a good pitcher, but otherwise an annoying 2 inch pri$&. And he was in desperate need of getting a jock strap in his mouth as a muzzle.

    You missed my point: I'm saying in both cases it does not represent the best traditions of baseball. When it becomes acceptable, I have a big problem with it. Pete Rose can't be in the HoF but the Houston Astros can outright cheat? No respect for tradition and the game. I would deny every Houston Astro HoF entry and outright consider kicking them out of the game.

    Change without respect for tradition is not evolution, it's erosion. Things like the catcher using those arm bands to send a signal to the pitcher what to call is an example of evolution as its an improvement on the communication system already part of the game. When the hitters get a message from the pen on what pitch is coming, and other messages from the bench, then its erosion, and I'll stop following the game.
