They just re-signed him to a minor league deal with invite to spring training. Not sure why he's showing on the 40 man roster page. -

I posted something similar after the jays were eliminated that Biagini will probably get a look as a starter in the spring. He was a starter in AA when they grabbed him via Rule 5 so there's 0 downside in giving him a shot at it again, when you know he's got the pen role as a backup if it doesn't work. Every team needs at least 7-10 starters every year and right now the jays are pretty thin past their starting 5. -
I'll be there in July next year, I hope they have a home series while I'm in town

I was about to post that same thing. With where the Jays are on the win curve, adding 5-6 wins is worth more than 8 million per. But cudos to the poster for laying out an argument that didn't boil down to "omg he's over 30 and just had a bad year"

At the risk of sounding Grant-esque, you're ignoring the context of Alford's situation. While it's technically true that Alford will have completed 5 years in the minor leagues after 2016, he's only had about 1.5 seasons worth of plate appearances over that 5 years - mainly due to playing football in the first 3 years. Taking that into account it's actually even more impressive that he's advanced as far as he has Since giving up football, he's had pretty much his entire 1.5 years of plate appearances in the past 2 seasons, with the missing time only due to s***** injury luck. If you told me that a guy with only 900ish plate appearances in the minors would be dominating in the Arizona fall league during his age 21 season...i'll take that any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Judging him the same as a true 5 year minor leaguer is willfully ignorant

I'd rather see the Cubs win, not because Cleveland beat the Jays. .. but because I'd like that franchise's fanbase to have something, considering the last time they were even in a World Series game was 1945, and theres probably very few of their fans left alive that saw that. -

This year's inning total was also the highest of his career, even though he was a starter in the minors. As a starter the most innings he ever threw in a minor league season was 42.1 due to injury. Also keep in mind he's already 2 years into into his 6 years of control, so trying him as a starter would probably take 2-3 seasons just to get him to around 200 innings and by then he's got 1 year left, assuming his helath holds up, which is no guarantee giving his prior surgery and low innings totals for the past 6 seasons. There's too many factors working against him to even bother taking the chance at transitioning him to a starter. Keep him in the pen and let him go until his arm breaks again.

Yes, and it was last years slash line for Alford. Ranking him #1 at the time this list was complied was very defensible.

He would still have the pen as a fallback if his starter results aren't encouraging. I don't think there's much of a downside in starting him at AAA

Yup, but Biagini could also start in AAA if Liriano is the 5th starter out of the gate. Since Biagini spent the full year on the 25 man roster, he can be optioned next year.

Looks like Donaldson just didn't see those well. He was behind every one and its not like they were 100 mph.
