    Regarding life insurance for ballplayers "Each player has life insurance through the league that pays $1 million plus 75 percent of their salary in excess of $1 million. The total is not to exceed $30 million and the club is the sole beneficiary." So players lives are insured, but it's meant to cover the team to offset costs of guaranteed contracts that they would still be required to pay out (he only had the pro-rated remainder of this season left as guaranteed money since he would have been arbitration eligible for the first time in 2017. ).
