    Just a bit of both really. You need the players and you need to punt picks to save slot money, so kill 2 birds with one stone I guess. You're right (counter to 37 please) in that if they didn't need to save slot money they wouldn't be taken this early.

    They still have 3 full teams to fill in Short season ball. Orgs always want some higher competition college guys to fill out roster spots down there since no team has 75 18-20 year olds kicking around. Hell, wait for the flurry of non drafted free agents that get signed after the draft for nothing but a 1 way ticket to Florida and the chance to pitch in instructs

    I think he very well could have had he not been hurt. He was likely about to be sent back down when he got hurt but Carrera's ongoing garbage D and average bat probably would have played himself out of the lineup before too long

    Alford wasn't bad, he would have to be added in the offseason anyways so it's quite likely he was coming up at some point. The unfortunate injury is going to screw with his service time and likely end up making him a Super 2 unless they option him next year for a long time.

    True, but the likelihood of prospects failing are probably greater than Trout falling off a cliff or getting a career ending injury. To each his own of course. In a vacuum. .. Trout for Vlad and Bichette is a no brainer, but as we all know, MLB isn't a vacuum.

    Time to turn it off. Every year it gets more insufferable to watch. 5 minute pick clocks yet they only manage to get through 5 picks in 45 minutes. Just dragging on.... and on.... and on.

    Trading Trout is about as much of a no-win scenario as it can get. The best player in any trade involving Trout, will always be Trout, no matter how many prospects and/or players you get back.

    Still can't believe some of these teams are in the competitive balance pick pool. Also, interesting fact - Minnesota will be drafting 1st overall while also being in first place of their division at the time of the draft. Hasn't happened since 2001 when ... Minnesota did it.

    Hate those things. Our company does it all the time in meetings and it always boils down to someone saying 2 things that are obviously true, and a third one where it's like 95% true except they changed a number, like " I went to Hawaii for 3 weeks last year" when they really only went for 2 weeks and 3 days.

    Well, this is his 6th minor league season and hasn't done anything to prove himself, so probably pretty good. But not likely during the season since he's at Dunedin and that roster likely won't change much due to anyone they draft. He's probably an offseason release candidate.

    Most roster moves have already happened. There's guys every year in the low minors that get cut, released, retire... or promoted to replace higher minors guys that have been cut, released... retired. Some will be hurt and stashed on the DL, plus the really low international signees from last year that won't be stateside will be already assigned to the Dominican summer League which started about a week ago.
