  1. With the benefit of hindsight, certainly 2023. Without hindsight, I think 2022. Berrios was a legit ace and Vlad Jr. should have been MVP. Everyone was expecting them to replicate those numbers.
  2. Interesting question. Would you have signed Kiermaier if the Varsho trade was already been done or would you have pivoted to a guy like Brantley instead?
  3. Martin put up a better wRC+ than Moreno at rhe same age, albeit at AA rather than AAA. There's only the one partial season to compare. He was also ranked #19 by BA. Atkins clearly knew better.
  4. I said the same thing about Austin Martin and was correct (moreso Atkins than myself). We'll have to see if they are also correct in this evaluation. They wouldn't have moved him otherwise, as they wouldn't knowingly make a bad trade.
  5. I never claimed that the Blue Jays ignored their own analytics team. They clearly believe that Moreno isn't going to be a quality starter, but a lot of people believe that he will be.
  6. For giving up 2 years of term and an additional player with modest value, I would expect someone who is better than Moreno projects to be. That's probably not the case.
  7. What I meant to say is that he's got a good chance to be an elite defensive catcher and his bat projects to be the same as Varsho, but at a much younger age. He's also got more team control. This doesn't mean we "lose" the trade, but we didn't get anywhere close to fair value. We gave up our leverage took the hit to address an area of need. The Diamondbacks made out like bandits. It's a massive win for them.
  8. Gabriel Moreno projects the same with the bat as a rookie, is probably an elite defender as well, and has 2 more years of control. Just a thought.
  9. Area of depth? I'm sorry, what? You can call me biased, but outside of Pivetta and his projected 1.5 WAR, they are relying on 2 guys who didn't pitch last year, a converted reliever, and a rookie, with Josh Wincowski as their top depth option.
  10. Twice is more than I would have expected.
  11. Anthony Kay to the Cubs
  12. For the dozens of posters calling out 'idiots' who believe Gurriel is a star or don't know about Varsho's defense, who are you responding to? I haven't seen a single person say that. From reading the thread, it seems the differences of opinion center around the value of Gabriel Moreno. That's to be expected as he is an 'unproven prospect' in the always brilliant Adam Greenwood's words. If he was proven, he wouldn't be a prospect.
  13. I think the 116 wRC+ projection for Gurriel is pretty reasonable. He's still a useful everyday outfielder, especially at 5 million. That being said, he doesn't have a particularly large amount of value. The issue for me is giving up an absolutely elite catching prospect to address a need that doesn't exist. I accept that some people view Moreno as more of an average starter going forward and that is a valid opinion. The trade makes some sense if you are in that camp. I was impressed with Moreno. I think he's very strong defensively, if not elite. He's got some of the most impressive bat control I have ever seen from a Blue Jays rookie. I think he's got multiple 5 WAR seasons in him. The Jays FO clearly doesn't believe in him, so I guess we'll have to see.
  14. I don't really understand the plan of this front office. This moves reeks of desperation, as it an absolutely massive overpay in terms of value, even before you account for Gurriel. That might be ok if we were desperate for a CF, but that position had been addressed with the Kiermaier signing. I would have preferred to hang onto Moreno if they weren't able to find a fair trade, which they clearly were not. We paid less for Josh Donaldson. I don't get it.
  15. It's not that bad in terms of value, but I'd prefer exploring a trade for Kepler first.
  16. Haha WTF is this? Saying that the team could use more pitching depth is something that was said on many occasions. I'm not 'taking an L' because I said Manoah was good or didn't predict a mostly inconsequential injury. This team was not a backend starter away from winning a championship. I would argue that it would have made zero difference in the standings or the playoff performance.
  17. Sorry for saying Manoah is really good and not predicting that a player that has never had an arm injury would get TJS. I'm not sure what I was thinking. You didn't say anything in that thread that was particularly noteworthy or out of line with what others thought. That's kind of abnormal as your takes are often particularly foolish in hindsight.
  18. Casey Lawrence has been around since 2010 if he is still with the organization.
  19. I guess so, but they really would have been better off keeping JD Martinez in that case.
  20. Justin Turner gets 15 million + incentives and a player option. The Dodgers turned down a 1/14 option for him. It's kind of puzzling that they wouldn't have just traded for him.
  21. Laissez-faire
  22. On a minor league deal, sure, but we already have a first baseman.
  23. They should probably explore a trade at this point. He's 27 and they clearly don't believe in him.
  24. You have to think that spells the end of Bobby Dalbec's tenure in Boston. Fair value for Turner, but a curious fit.
