  1. Perhaps some of them will, but I don't expect Belt to play in the outfield. His at-bats can only come at the expense of Kirk, Jansen, and Guerrero Jr. We also need to consider that Belt is 35 and hit something like Tapia in 2022. The person taking Tapia's role probably isn't on the team yet in my opinion.
  2. Replacing Hernandez with Kiermaier is about as big of a downgrade as a team can make (offensively) so that's a lot to make up for. Varsho projects to be a little worse than Gurriel was, but we can call that a push. I think Jansen will regress a bit and we will probably have more injuries. We'll need a good season from Belt and some progress from guys like Vlad just to break even, let alone be better.
  3. That's a pretty big difference as far as an entire team goes. I'm also confident that the defense and pitching will be better, so we'll see where that lands us.
  4. That's a risk you take when you acquire an MVP calibre player for the playoffs. It happens all of the time. It was one of the best value trades (at the time) I have ever seen from the Indians perspective.
  5. I'm confident that this team will have a lower wRC+.
  6. Cleveland got the use of an MVP calibre player in the playoffs. It didn't work out for them in the playoffs, but teams always pay up for that chance.
  7. Biggio is our best option at 2B. I think you use Merrifield in a platoon with Kiermaier and use Espinal at 2B against LHP and to spell Bo and Chapman, at least to start the season. Belt's real competition is Kirk and Jansen, less so the infielders.
  8. I knew everyone would like that
  9. One can't help but wonder how differently the Ricciardi era would be viewed if they had made the playoffs 3 times on a modest payroll. There's a half decent chance he could still be our GM to this day.
  10. That's underselling it. They had Ken Griffey Jr, Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez, Edgar Martinez, and Jay Buhner together for five years and didn't do anything. Some will raise an eyebrow at me including Buhner, but he hit 40+ home runs three times during that span and was top 3 in MVP voting. How could the Yankees trade him for Ken Phelps? Ken Phelps, Ken Phelps, Ken Phelps....
  11. Every team had to deal with that Yankees/Red Sox duo that would take the East and Wildcard seemingly every year. Some pretty good teams missed because of that, most of all the 1998 Blue Jays. That team had Delgado, Green, and Canseco slugging 40 bombs and Clemens, Hentgen, and Carpenter. I always wonder what they could have done in the playoffs.
  12. It's crazy that the Marlins aren't the team with the least playoff success during that time span (Mariners). The Pirates also had some pretty raw years other than 2013-15.
  13. https://www.complex.com/sports/2017/05/ugly-history-boston-being-most-racist-sports-city-america Yes I have been to Vermont and Massachusetts I am indeed suggesting that they would get less blowback for signing Bauer than other teams would. Voter habits are not necessarily indicative of how sports fans will react. The team has nothing to lose, their reputation is a 0/10 and they always sell out anyways. I would argue that Cora (who should have a lifetime ban) has done more harm to baseball than Bauer and it hasn't lost them any fans.
  14. I understand that the drought for the Phillies is a big mark against them and didn't ignore it, but they have had considerable success since then and the level of overall futility is nowhere close. Even at their awful pace, they would have 3 pennants in 46 years. I don't think it's as simple as going by all time winning percentage. The Marlins are the worst in the league by that metric, but surely their playoff success negates some of that. The Padres have also made two World Series, while the Mariners are the only franchise in the league to never win a pennant. As far as fan experience goes, I think that matters a lot more than the overall record in a bunch of losing seasons. When you miss the playoffs for a full two decades (basically twice), it doesn't really matter if the team is 78-84 or 68-94. We know that as Blue Jays fans. That's just my 2 cents. I understand the individual regular season games are much more important to you and that's valid as well.
  15. Sportsnet and Marquee are essentially the same thing. I like both.
  16. Obviously a typo, given that it is 46 years. That fact that there are two 18+ year droughts within that span is quite remarkable.
  17. You have to mention the Detroit Lions, who have gone 55 seasons without making the Superbowl. They might be worse than the Cardinals. There really can't be any debate about baseball. It's the Seattle Mariners by a country mile. They have gone 56 seasons without making the World Series and have 2 separate playoff droughts of 18 and 20 seasons. The Phillies were better in 2022 than the Mariners have ever been and have been to the World Series 5 other times since 1977, along with 2 Championships.
  18. I think he goes to Boston. They check lots of boxes. - They desperately need him. - They have a long, long history of employing players with shady pasts. - They employ Chris Sale and Alex Cora, so they don't care much about character. - Their fanbase would care less than any other team.
  19. Do we think the Devers contract is a good comparable for a Guerrero Jr. contract extension? Devers is a little more established and older, but the skillsets are reasonably similar.
  20. Nice research. I like a fresh thread to start the season, rather than having it filled with offseason discussion, but to each their own.
  21. It would be better if we merged the premature 2023 thread into this one until the season starts. That's the way it's always been done.
  22. It's already known that we need a 4th outfielder that can hit a bit. Other than putting Merrifield out there and starting Espinal at 2B, we're already short on options if we bench Kiermaier against lefties (we should). There's Pollock, McCutchen, Duvall, Pham, Cain. Offer them all minor league deal worth a couple million and see what we have in Spring Training. Rafael Ortega projects better than all of them and just signed a minor league deal. Two bench spots are essentially wide open for the right player at any position. Let's put them to good use.
  23. The A's have made Seth Brown available. What do we think of that for LF?
  24. Casey Larence was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and has mostly been here since. He's a real Jays lifer. Fun trivia for longtime fans. Who did we trade for Eric Hinske?
  25. It's unfortunate that Devon Travis couldn't stay healthy. He was outstanding for such an inexperienced hitter.
