I'd really like to see Biagini start too. In 2015 his K rate in AA as a 25 year old stunk. He was fastball, change, curveball and the reports on the change were actually good. But his profile was basically - average stuff, pitchability, might play up in the pen. He didn't throw the feel-pitch change out of the bullpen much at all but he did add a slutter that had really great results. If he can slide back into a starting role with four decent pitches now, good pitchability, and MLB success and experience in his back pocket, you can imagine #3/4 upside. Tanner Roark comes to mind, as a ceiling comparison. Kind of a kitchen sink RHP with four decent enough pitches and good pitchability. And if he sucks, just pull the plug and revert to relief. The move right now is Biagini to AAA and Bolsinger (out of options) as the swing man.

It's not about assuming anything. Obviously we don't know what will happen. It's about objective talent analysis, reasonable expectations, and a basic consideration of regression to the proper means. If Howell or Smith are terrible then that will be terrible luck. If they are good then it will have been reasonably foreseeable. No assumptions necessary.

The offseason has been quietly superb for Toronto. From Bautista and Pearce at great value, to these fantastic late bullpen signings of Howell and Smith, to the responsible investment and upside play with Gurriel, all the way to the attractive minor league deals (Salty, Oberholtzer, House, Harrell, Floyd.) You can gripe about one year too many for Morales all you want, but the front office has earned that value back ten-fold over the entirety of the offseason.

From 2011-2015, Smith was tied for 27th in reliever fWAR with 4.0. An extreme groundball pitcher (56.2%), his career FIP is 0.72 runs higher than his career ERA. If you slot his RA9-WAR (8.3) into that leaderboard, he would have ranked 6th. If you look at the RA9-WAR leaderboard itself, he was 11th from 2011 to 2015. Smith's career ERA is a cool 2.93. That's 65th out of 454 "qualified" relievers on Fangraphs since 2007, when he came into the league. As a low velocity sinker/slider pitcher, Smith is not your typical setup reliever. He was awful by FIP (4.99) in 2016 but decent by ERA (3.46). His 88-90mph sinker didn't lose any velocity from 2014 and 2015, so there aren't any glaring signs of decline. His K and BB% were very close to his career rates. His GB% was a bit lower than normal, but still well above average. His HR/FB rate was extreme compared to his career rate - probably just bad luck. This signing is very good. On this turf, with a strong defense, Smith is a great fit for Toronto.

Dietrich looks like a True Cardinal, just sayin I could also still trade pitching for an OF. Pomeranz, Fiers, Liriano, Waino, Rondon, Brach, Jim Johnson would be the pool. Could 2 for 1.

If a few select players really step up and shove in 2017 (Berrios, Hoffman, Bregman, Zunino, Reed) then I could see Boxy making the playoffs. I think you should cut Tyler White though.

You're making a poor argument here, BTS. Let's say you are a GM. You can sign Carter or Park. Say the money is the same and wOBA projections are the same. Who will be better in terms of baserunning and defense? You have to pick one.

It seems like Toronto only has maybe $5m left in payroll. Enough for one 25 man roster worthy relief pitcher, and that's about it.

Well you can just look at them. Park is like, 5 inches shorter and 40 pounds lighter than Carter. He's probably a bit faster and he probably has a bit more range. Common cents

Of course. Good time to try to extend Stroman for sure. Sanchez, maybe wait a year. He likely won't lead the league in ERA and get Cy votes in 2017. Boras doesn't sign these kind of pre-arb extensions though, at least not in most cases.

I'll take Smoak as a bench player. At least he can defensive sub into 1B and pinch hit. Sometimes he runs into a baseball and puts it in the second deck, which is always fun. Tepera I think bugs me because he doesn't deserve his opportunities. It grinds my gears to no end when people talk about his "reverse splits", which are obviously a total mirage and LHB in MLB should absolutely destroy him. But he throws 95 and has a slider that looks kind of good so he'll continue to get chances, and he'll probably be awful.
