  1. Very high WAR total occurrences like that tend to be driven partly by luck. Regression is appropriate. He's projected to be the best 3B in baseball and the 6th best position player. Steamer isn't exactly pessimistic on him...
  2. New prospect value table http://www.thepointofpittsburgh.com/?p=51 Crazy that OAK would trade ~50M in surplus for Samardzija. Maybe they thought it would be possible to flip Samardzija this offseason for something similar. Or maybe they think they've accomplished that with Semien.
  3. And Hanshin. Hopefully Mauro Gomez sold him on how great Buffalo is...
  4. gammonsdaily.com give him a chance! Ol' Gammo won't be around forever...
  5. no. OF ALL TIME.
  6. He needs a better editor on his website, that's for sure. But generally speaking I like how he writes, the way it reads. It's like somebody who knows a lot is just talking to you about a topic. I also really like how he rolls little factoids like that into his pieces. He's just a good story-teller I think and the odd grammatical trip up doesn't really bug me. Lots of baseball writers and pundits can churn out a textbook story about a transaction but most of the time they don't have any flavour. That's why I'll read something by Lott or Griffin from time to time but I'll pretty much never click on a Shi Dividi link.
  7. You'd still want Aoki with Saunders here?
  8. I like Gammons. He's old and he doesn't know how to twitter but he's smart, a good journalist, and his articles are excellent.
  9. Can't read his mind but it's probably not like he'd leave ~12M or something on the table just because he doesn't like Seattle. I'm sure Melky liked the thought of hitting 2nd in front of / playing with Cano.
  10. You'd have to assume that the marginal $ for that 4th year just didn't make sense. 3/42 > 4/46, for example. Especially at Melky's relatively young age.
  11. Well for one thing, Headley is probably going to get like half that money.
  12. It's just based on final standings.
  13. Melky's best seasons came when he was 26 and 27 years old. Obviously we don't know for sure that he's done his peak, but based on the performance curve of an average player, his best seasons are likely behind him. The average players peak in their mid to late 20s. That's just our best guess, and anyone's best guess really. It's not absolutely going to be true. The fact that Melky had an excellent looking season where he basically maxed out his hitting abilities, tagging almost everything, and he was still only slightly above average in total value... doesn't really bode well for his future value IMO.
  14. They aren't paying for 2011-2014 Melky. They're paying for 2015-2017 Melky. 6 WAR in 3 seasons would be like, an 80th percentile outcome for Chicago.
  15. They're still so far from the playoffs though IMO. 2B, C, RF, 3B all suck. Melky and LaRoche are overrated, league average players at best. All of their SP depth is crud past the top 3. All of their RP suck after the two FA signings.
  16. Decent deal for Chicago if true. Seems fair.
  17. This will probably be the year that Chris Sale's elbow finally explodes.
  18. That's not very many years! Pretty surprised he couldn't get four.
  19. He's certainly beeeeeg and strooooong.
  20. Every time I've seen Smoak play it's like he's swinging a pool noodle.
  21. Yeah he's got surprisingly little pop. Big enough to muscle 20 out of the Rogers Centre, but he's not going to be hitting many second deckers or anything. This is evident in his minor league SLG and OPS along with the MLB ISO.
  22. No. In all honestly it's probably just Boras leaking fake Blue Jays interest to the Japanese media in order to increase Toritani's leverage. Maybe all Toritani wants is more money from his NPB team so he hired Boras to fake legitimate interest to cross the ocean.
  23. lol @ a mean projection that low. Goins ranked 112th in wRC+ out of the 119 2B that Steamer projects. At least he's projected to outhit Cesar Izturis though.
