Yeah I find it so frustrating how everybody is heaping praise on AJ Preller and saying it's so nice to see the Padres being so aggressive.
I don't like a single move they've made, in a nutshell, except for maybe the Myers deal which I guess you could make a decent case for from San Diego's perspective.
They have the biggest OF in baseball and now they have possibly the worst defensive unit patrolling it. I don't think they'll even be .500.
The Blue Jays seem to be making a lot of solid waiver claims and minor league signings this offseason.
Added guys like Chris Colabello, Caleb Gindl, Ezequil Carrera, this guy, Wilton Lopez, Kalish, Barton, Albers as stashable depth.

Most of them have to get traded. Quentin could platoon with Alonso and turn into a 1B/OF platoon guy. Venable could hang around as a bench piece I guess, but he'll be much easier to move than Maybin so Maybin is probably just the 4th OF.
Seth Smith could play 1B (with Quentin) and they could trade Alonso for whatever.
Rymer could simply start in AAA but him and Renfroe are kind of redundant as AAA RH COFers and they might be smart to just trade Rymer now while he's still just 23 and a "prospect". Although if he goes ham in the PCL they could get a better return in the future, maybe. Of course they could have him penciled in as the Upton replacement in 2016.
They could do a lot of different things and they'll have to do at least some of them before the season.
They could still flip an arm or two too, like Kelly or Despaigne, who are young and talented and way down the depth chart.

The O's nixed a couple of FA signings recently due to medicals.
The Napoli FA signing got nixed because of his degenerative hip (But I think he's ended up making more money than he would have on the 3 year contract anyway!).
It probably happens a bit more often than you think because with lots of minor deals you don't really even hear about them until the official announcement (or at least the day of the official announcement).

Morrow and Janssen were pretty smart guys. Are there any smarties left on the team? I guess Dickey wrote a book / is kind of aloof and stuff.
Bautista seems pretty smart.
Donaldson is very smart and well studied about hitting.
Nobody else on the team strikes me as particularly dumb or smart. Stroman might be more intelligent than most but hard to say.
