I was thinking about that this morning and whittled it down to two possibilities: 1) they wanted a more "pure" SS, whereas Kawasaki is more of a 2B, or 2) racism. Leaning option 2.

Nobody is having a start as rough or unlucky as Spanky. Yadi, VMart, and Melky all have zero HR and OPS's under .641. These are all 100-150ish O-Rank players, who combined for 55 dingers last year. Walker has been shelled almost every time out. Holland and Cobb are both dead now. A few other bats are scuffling, to various degrees. He's basically had one player take a step forward, and that's Archer. His offense before the season looked old but adequate, almost all of them being top ~150 O-Rank players, and the top 5 in the rotation looked decent with Archer, Cobb, Walker, Holland, and Duffy. But it's ugly now.

Different circumstances of viability. I would feel fine with him there in an emergency but by banking on him to start there you're probably bleeding more runs defensively than Valencia is adding with his bat. Could always do the math on it though. The question really is, is Jonathan Diaz worth giving a roster spot to if his only discernible skill is the ability to play the MIF at some degree of fuzzy competence, or would it behoove the team to instead give that roster spot to a pinch hitter? If you're a risk-averse GM I guess you'd just keep the backup SS on the 25 man because that's just what people do. If you cut Diaz and Goins doesn't get hurt until Reyes returns, then you've won the gamble (and hopefully, Colabella has clobbered a pinch hit HR and won a game in the interim).

But to be entirely fair, in all likelihood Jonathan Diaz is actually a sub-replacement level player so if Goins ever gets hurt, Donaldson at SS would probably lead to a superior arrangement of position players than just plugging the nominal backup SS Diaz in there.

Yeah, this move is (again) hard to wrap your head around. With 1B/DH thoroughly clogged with Bautista's shoulder injury, Colabello's only attractive quality would seem to be as a late inning pinch hitter for a light hitting lefty like Goins or Carrera. I'm guessing we could see him pinch hit for Carrera once or twice, and that's probably it for this Colabello stint.
