    Of course there is always a chance. But realistically, a team like the Jays with multiple holes has essentially a 1/20 = 5% chance of lucking into the WC. Unless they open the vault and sign multiple free agents, Alex Cobb and others. Quite unlikely. The question is, keep JD, hope for luck, and lose him for nothing at end of 2018, or trade him now for Reyes+ to load up for the Vladdy era?

    Some unrealistic expectations of what 1 yr of JD will bring. Gyorko for sure (Cards would no longer need him or his $), Reyes, and low minors high upside guy is likely fair value

    Flaherty, Bader, and Gyorko Too much to ask for 1 year of JD, obviously Gyorko's contract runs out end of 2019. Vladdy ready for sure by then. Jays can run out a Bader, Alford, Hernandez OF. Move whats his name (he suxx so much i cant remember his name)

    I'm wondering if a JD extension is already agreed and will be announced when season is over. Not what I would do, although he will likely earn the contract and more in full (barring further injuries) before becoming a negative value asset. Shapiro operating within Rogers revenue/popularity expectations.

    If money is a consideration for Ohtani and I don't doubt it is, potential endorsement deals are a factor for year 1 anyway. I'm sure Shapiro has been 'facilitating' potential 'sponsors'. Toronto may have the edge here as a national team.

    Jose should announce he is retiring. Then the Jays can have a quick little ceremony before the last game. Maybe fill a few more seats. At least we don't have to hear another 5 year, $150 Million demand again.

    Pitt wouldn't have much interest in either. Not much, if any, upgrade on who they have in house.

    Disagree with your premise. The Jays were strong enough to make both ALCS without Jose, without considering the contribution of the return from a Bautista trade. Bautista was the face of the franchise for quite some time and EE may not have had the breakout he did without JB's influence. He will be remembered, but not missed.

    Urena is a fringe prospect. Other than a bit more power than is typical for SS, he has no elite tools. A realistic projection for him is Ryan Goins with a bit more power.
