You don't have enough information to say with any kind of confidence that a couple million dollars and a low-end prospect to go from Saunders to Bruce isn't worth it. There are far too many unknowns to complain about a low-investment move like that without sounding stupid. It's a notch above complaining about a MiLB deal.

Sure, if you think he's better than Saunders. It's not like acquiring Jay Bruce is stopping them from acquiring a bat that profiles as a leadoff hitter.

Nothing is ever that black and white in baseball. Bruce was terrible in 2014 and 2015. Saunders has no meniscus in his knee and didn't play last year. It is certainly not impossible that internal analysis would lead a FO to believe that they'll get more from Jay Bruce than from Saunders. Once they've reached that conclusion, why not make the move? I don't think anyone is suggesting that it would be acceptable to move a high end prospect from the system, but if the cost is like Travis Bergen and a couple million dollars to roll the dice on someone they have reason to like, it's silly criticize it.

Of course "the other crap" matters. It's all that matters. It's perfectly defensible to prefer Jay Bruce to Saunders in 2016. All it would really take to justify that position is Saunders and his dead knee running like Frank Thomas early in ST.

You have no idea whether or not there was money was involved to cover part of Bruce's salary. You have no idea who the prospect was. You have no idea what the FO currently thinks of Saunders and the likelihood that he contributes in a meaningful way this year. You have no idea what kind of internal work has suggested that Bruce might not be as bad as he's been over the last two years. You have no idea whether Austin Jackson is even remotely interested in signing here.

The point was that we have no idea about anything, and celebrating a deal falling through is silly when we don't know what the deal is.
