  1. He's already had TJS. It might be as simple as them not trusting his mechanics to let him hold up over 180 innings. 1-3 wins in relief isn't really a bad outcome for him at all if they don't trust him to hold up for 32 starts.
  2. I'll be in this boat if it's Lake or Brown who get the spot. I think the probable outcome for both is replacement level or a bit worse, and think Pompey is likely a better player. Ceciliani is interesting though. He has the skill set you want from a 4th OF, and there is evidence of some offensive upside. He might be a good player. He might be a better player than Pompey. Keeping him to start the season is acceptable to me because; A) there's a strong argument to be made that you're not giving anything away in terms of wins we get to see what we have in the 25-year old C) we might be able to gain a year of control on Pompey
  3. So you get 7 effective starts for 1M and move on to the next guy. What's the problem?
  4. Damn that sucks. All the best man.
  5. I'm pretty sure I'm like 15 years younger, like 30 pounds heavier, and don't have a a bad back.
  6. Which one of us is the fat kid?
  7. Fight me you salty-dog guzzling, uphill-gardening troglodytic bike.
  8. His curve has a high pitch value for the same reason that his ERA is a run lower than his xFIP: his BABIP is unsustainably low. I don't feel like looking it up, but I'm guessing that the whiff rate of his curveball is far below what you'd want from your best breaking ball.
  9. He's 24 on July 1st.
  10. Give Dickey a firm handshake and tell him not to let the door hit him on the way out of Rogers centre on October 31st?
  11. Josh Thole has been such a blight on this organization. Over the last 3 years: 120 games, 337 PA, 212/283/258 line for a 0.250 wOBA and 53 wRC+. -0.7 fWAR + a couple of framing runs, maybe, depending on the math that results from catching Dickey. The opportunity cost of rostering this leech is significant. -0.7 wins from him, when a hallway competent team should have been able to get about a win from half a season of a backup catcher. That's a 1.7 win swing. I can not accept that he's so uniquely skilled at catching Dickey that he earns his keep.
  12. I'd still prefer to get a chance to see how good he is defensively than run Thole out there. He gets great reviews for his defense, and it would be nice to get some framing data and see if he can give you some runs above replacement while catching 40 games or so. I'm not convinced that any catcher in the org is above replacement, Martin excluded. I'm almost sure Thole and Sanchez aren't. Jimenez might be. Or maybe his framing suxxx and he's terrible. Either way we're taking fractions of a win, so it doesn't really matter.
  13. Who's better? I'd rather have him than Thole.
  14. Huh? Why not just have Conger (or Phegley, or Kratz, or whoever) catch Dickey if you think it will exert a physical toll on Martin.
  15. I'd give up a strike here and there to have, say, Hank Conger around instead of Thole. Mostly because there is a non-zero probability that Martin misses a few months in any given season.
  16. They could have also went out and acquired someone like Conger or Phegley in the offseason and had an actual contributor for 40-50 starts and decent insurance in case of injury to Martin. Instead we're chained to Josh Thole, who becomes the every day catcher if Martin breaks a femur or something. I despise RA Dickey.
  17. I've never bought into Thole having a unique ability to catch the knuckler.
  18. I guess it doesn't really matter considering none of these guys are long-term assets. What's the most likely configuration: Thole as the MLB backup, Sanchez and Quintero to AAA, and Jimenez traded for a bag of balls? I can't wait for Dickey and his sidekick to be gone.
  19. My point was that he's probably the second best catcher in the org.
  20. Why is a team with Josh Thole and Humberto Quintero as their catching depth looking to trade AJ Jimenez?
  21. He's been working on developing secondary pitches with professional coaches since he was drafted almost 6 years ago, and still hasn't found a usable pitch. This narrative of him spending 3 months in AAA and discovering a wipeout changeup is silly. Just let him blow people away with that filthy fastball in high leverage relief innings.
  22. Darrell njh Darrell boxy Darrell Dinger Darrell Ceciliani
  23. Why would you prefer that owners make even more money than they already do?
  24. There's really only downside there. In the above scenario there are two likely outcomes: 1) He pitches well, and opts out because he thinks he can do better than the remaining 3/90 on his contract. The team loses an ace pitcher on a palatable contract (that presumably has some trade value). 2) He sucks, and doesn't use the opt-out. The team is stuck with an albatross.
