That changes things if he gets locked up to a favourable extension with some team options. I don't attach much value to the possibility unless it happens though. Actually we might see something like that this offseason with Stro or Sanchez. Shatkins locked up Carrasco and Kluber before they had to in Cleveland.

Safer asset with a longer track record? I'd definitely do it if they both had 4 years of control. It being four for Sanchez and three for Calhoun might tip it in favour of Sanchez. I dunno, in terms of long term assets I have a hard time taking the pitcher over the bat.

I think you're underrating Calhoun. Three consecutive seasons between 3.7 and 4 fWAR. 4 runs less valuable than EE over that time.

If that were the case Tyler Flowers would have gotten like 5/50 last offseason instead of 2/5 and Jason Castro would be on the verge of signing a lucrative long-term deal.

He gets like 2 runs a year from baserunning. He's an above-average hitter who plays a very good RF, mostly because of a strong arm and great reads/instincts. I think Calhoun remains very productive from 29-31.

4 years of Sanchez seems pretty close to fair for 3 years of Calhoun. I think most people here would do that.

I don't see the relief pitching, DH, or backup C positions as being places you'd address by moving a starter. Obviously it would be nice to add some shiny parts, but it's not necessary. IMO the biggest areas that absolutely need to be addressed with proven talent are 1B and a corner OF spot. And there are so many options available that it's hard to imagine not getting two of them. Trading a starter just opens up a very big hole, and the only free agent arms are Nova, and Hellickson, who I'm sure nobody wants to sign.

I don't see what anyone would disagree with. I'm not saying that framing is unimportant, I'm saying that nobody is paying sticker price for those runs. And they aren't.

That's why I don't understand the talk of trading a SP. The team has to fill 3 spots, but we're talking two corner outfield positions and 1B. The market actually has a lot of guys likely to be available on 1-3 year deals, and has somewhere in the range of $30-50M to spend. There are at least 20 names out there that would help the team, and signing 2-3 of them shouldn't be impossible. There's no excuse to not land some free agents on small deals.

You're right that teams pays less for defense than they do offense. I think most of that is that defense is much harder to bank on long term. Defense does pay though, as opposed to pitch framing which teams don't really seem to want to pay for at all.

I'd go close to 100M over five years for Chapman or Jansen if payroll goes to 160+. Those guys can be worth like 3-5 wins over a season. Also, the fan in me loves watching elite relievers.

Based on what? Martin is the only great framer to get a big contract. A lot of great framers who *should* be worth 2+ wins with a whole season of playing time are signing contracts for a couple million bucks as a backup. Someone like Tyler Flowers is an elite framer, and he was just non-tendered by the White Sox in favour of Alex Avila and Dioner Navarro before signing a 2/5 + an option free agent deal in Atlanta. Nobody was willing to pay for his framing. I don't think you can say that framing runs have the same market value as other runs, because they very clearly don't.

I remember when it was en vogue to mock the idea that elite bullpens played up in the playoffs. Oops. Not talking about specific teams, I think you could rationalize a good enough argument for contact hitters outperforming high-K power hitters in October that it warrants looking at the data. Maybe someone has looked at the data and found that there's nothing there.

I feel like there might be something to the idea that teams who rely more on walks and mashing mistakes for homers might have less success in cold weather against great pitching staffs who issue few walks and don't make many mistakes. Recent anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that contact teams have fared well in the postseason.
