TBH, even if they wanted to see Alford up ASAP there were guys with options that could have been used to faciliate that: all of Hernandez, McKinney, and Tellez are something like replacement level and certainly aren't above being sent down for a few weeks. And the bats are actually pretty healthy right now, aside from Pompey and Travis who are both made of glass.
This is being sold and largely perceived as a move to make room for an exciting prospect, but that prospect isn't actually very exciting, and Pillar certainly wasn't standing in his way. Really this is about clearing $5M because the team doesn't care about Pillar's two wins in a lost season. IMO it's the opposite of the kind of move fans should be applauding. The team got marginally worse today to save a few bucks in the short term.
