    So Ovechkin and Svechnikov have a fight in the middle of a hockey game, and now Carolina is probably missing a 20-goal scorer for the playoffs, and the best goal-scorer in hockey might have hurt his hand. Imagine this kind of idiocy being applauded in any other sport. "Bryce Harper's wrist is kind of wonky now, and Walker Buehler is out for the playoffs with a concussion, but the fight was awesome!"

    He's a left-handed Teoscar Hernandez, only you can't quite dream on a breakout in the same way because Teoscar has huge power and Smith doesn't.

    There are a lot of ways to get to replacement level. You can have a plus glove and a terrible bat (Goins), an average bat and bad corner OF defense (DSJ), or any number of other combinations. The point is that I don't think anyone is complaining about DSJ a month or two from now.

    At least Jansen is getting it done defensively. I don't think it's about sending a message so much as it is getting him out of the spotlight to work on his D. He wasn't even comfortable making short throws to 1B with tons of time.

    The defense is worse than we all hoped it was a year ago. He's not going to play short, and right now the path to being an average 2B defensively is a long one. He'll have to hit a lot to be a useful player if his only defensive utility is as a bad 2B. I feel like asking a a 25-year old to make the kind of gains he has to to be a useful player is a tall order. It's doable, but right now he's a mess.

    Looking like a bit of a sunk cost right now. Below-average hitter and a complete tire fire at second, and he's 25. Still owed 16M from 2020-23.

    The Isles finishing ahead of the leafs in the standings after the Leafs signed their franchise player is amazing. They're a really interesting team. They also brought the former leaves GM in, who promptly hired the best coach in the league, and they went from giving up the most goals in the league last year to the fewest this year.
