    Byfuglien is apparently a horrible defender, which is why people don't like him at defense (I'm a Canucks fan, so I don't see him very often to weigh in myself). I think his best value might be at forward with the ability to play defense on the PP, or fill in on D if someone goes down with injury during the game or if the team is down and needs some extra scoring punch from the back end.

    He said he loves pressure. If he signs with the Yankees and scuffles, he'll get more pressure than he bargained for. I do love seeing things go wrong for the Yankees too

    I think at some point the batter either has to completely overhaul their swing (which most wouldn't do if they're successful), or has to just live with it. You can make tweaks and adjust the mental approach, but that's about it. I don't know if it's true or not, I'm just thinking out loud.

    I suspect it has more to do with the analytics available now. When the players first come up, people have to discover their weaknesses and counter any adjustments the player makes. After two years or so, the player is likely to be unable or unwilling to make further adjustments (maybe minor tweaks), so the book on how to attack them grows while their ability to adapt to the changes often doesn't. Add to that a general reduction in speed as the player finishes filling out, and an early peak makes some sense. The early decline may not be from degradation of skill, other than a little speed, but from the adjustments being made by the pitchers.

    Interesting. Surprising to see so many of Happ's pitches rate with decent TIPS. I think when you get more data, it might be an idea to separate starters and relievers in the comparisons.

    I think he would among casuals. He certainly wouldn't among more knowledgeable fans.

    This was sort of talked about in another thread. I wouldn't be opposed to it as a bench power bat and platoon guy with Lind if he comes cheap. There ARE better options (which may or may not want to come here cheap), but signing him may improve ticket sales more than any other bench guy possibly would. Bottom line is, I wouldn't love or hate it.

    That's what I'd be interested in finding out. April and September numbers seem to have higher BB rates and K rates. You would think that pitchers that miss the bat well would benefit more during those months than pitchers that work to contact. I don't know if it would make a difference with the projection accuracy or not, but would be interesting to find out - especially for projections like JFaS.

    Yeah, my point is that their true talent may not be reflected in the stats for those months as well as they are for the other months of the season. It would be interesting to eliminate those months and see if the projections improve in accuracy.

    Then should the teams be allowed to test a player every day, or twice a day? Every week? Every month? Do players need to agree to have cameras in every room of their homes, cars, etc and be monitored 24/7? At what point does it violate the rights of the player? Do teams get penalized retroactively because a newer test that wasn't available at the time was applied to old samples? Do they get penalized retroactively when NO test exists to allow them to detect the drug but the player gets caught as part of the paper trail from a DEA investigation? You just can't do that. The only way the team should be punished is if there's evidence that they helped persuade the player to take them or worse (in which case they should get hit extremely hard, like loss of all draft picks for 3 years or something).

    Why should the team doctors be expected to detect something if the league can't half the time?

    That's actually an interesting point. JFaS, you should look at eliminating April and September numbers when doing your calculations and see if it improves the accuracy.

    There's really no way to do that, at least not for all cases. For example, let's say evidence came out about a player cheating 2 years ago, and the player has since switched teams. Why should the new team, who likely knew nothing about it at all, be punished for it (beyond the player suspension which is unavoidable)? What they DO need to do is differentiate between classes of PED, and circumstances behind taking them. If it's obvious the player couldn't have taken it accidentally (via a supplement for example) and it's a heavyweight PED, throw the book at them (at least a year). If it's something like a recreational drug, even 50 games seems a little harsh. Etc. Right now the suspension isn't high enough to make the penalty worse than the potential reward in some cases.

    With the length legal trials can go, that would probably allow A-Rod to finish out his contract, then retire.

    I don't think the Mariners want to trade Ackley anyhow as he can back up center as well. It seems more likely that they'll look to trade Franklin, but Janssen and Happ wouldn't get it done.

    I don't think AA would do it even if people would believe him. He seems to be very careful to say nothing at all rather than taking even the chance of saying something that's not 100% truthful. Regardless, the teams involved will bid each other up just fine without our help.

    I wonder how much of Beckett's contract they'd be willing to "eat"? Maybe we could toss Romero back their way plus a reliever or something.

    Once he (presumably) clears waivers, he might not be the worst option in the world as a 4th outfielder and bench bat with some pop. At the very least, it would probably add far more revenue to the club than his contract would cost as it would get some of the casuals excited. If things didn't go well, cut him and bring up Pillar or something. (Still prefer someone like Baker though)
