  1. You really have to include the posting fee in Darvish's cost to the Rangers. He would be getting a hell of a lot more if the posting fee was only 20M then.
  2. Drabek threw at the end of last year (in the majors), and was hitting 95mph and averaging 92.7 on the fastball. Unless he blows out the arm a third time, he'll almost certainly pitch in the majors again (and I suspect he may break camp as one of the starters). The depth next year looks to be fantastic, which will probably (but hopefully not) be critical to our success. Now that we have it, we'll probably only have to use 5 starters all season. Murphy's Law and all that. I really believe we only need one more guy "guaranteed" to give us 200 innings. We should have the budget for it, or at least be able to make room for it.
  3. Yeah, that was a lot earlier than 2009 though.
  4. Romero in 2009. Cecil gets some votes too probably.
  5. You mean other than Canseco?
  6. I'm not sure I'd put the Mariners that high this year. Another year or two though and I think they absolutely will be.
  7. I know that, my point was that it would be better to replace that system to eliminate all players just being posted for 20M whether they're currently worth it or not in an attempt by the teams to boost their finances. A percentage of the AAV for the years that the player would be under control in Japan would do that.
  8. I think you misunderstood. The team would still have to decide to post the player, and the player would still have to agree to be posted.
  9. I think what they should do is if the player agrees to be posted, a certain percentage of their AAV on the contract (only for the years the Japan team would still have control over them for) goes to the posting team. Maybe that's 25% or 50%, but whatever it is that would seem the best way to approach it. Completely eliminate the bidding nonsense.
  10. Olney writes to his audience and gives them what they want to hear. If he actually believes what he's writing, then he's an idiot for sure. I think I put the odds at 50/50.
  11. That's something that shouldn't be expected. A lot of evaluators seemed to feel he would be a #3 starter with possible #2 upside, but he's not Darvish.
  12. I'm a little unclear on the process. Is it 30 days to collect all the bids and then the teams that post the 20M can negotiate with him, or can teams immediately post the 20M and start to negotiate but the window where teams can do so ends in 30 days? (ie, could he sign tomorrow if he chose to, or will the FA pitching market stay stagnant for at least another month)
  13. There's no way the turf has any bearing on TJS for pitchers.
  14. There's certainly some signs recently that he will be competitive on Tanaka, but there's also a good chance that Tanaka will prefer a west coast team. I think the talk about the Jays possibly going more than 5 years is the biggest hint he'll be on him, and the timing regarding Kawasaki is also interesting. I wonder if Rogers could have their eye on expanding their demographic regarding sports.
  15. I said a few days ago that I thought Youkilis signing there might be a sign that Tanaka would be posted (a way of trying to appease some of the fans).
  16. Very interesting article. I think JFaS has the best (and cheapest) approach!
  17. Let's be honest. If someone like Bean or Friedman had managed to dump a contract like Wells, people would be giving them all the credit for pulling it off.

  19. Maybe he'll just go with 2 or 3 starters and a crapload of relievers each going 2 innings.
  20. Smells like trade bait inflation to me
  21. THAT would be awesome. I'd probably kick in some more mid level stuff too.
  22. Bitcoin mining MIGHT have been somewhat viable several years ago
  23. We also have been rumored to be looking for a mid-rotation guy with upside, and want someone durable. Jimenez fits both those profiles perfectly imo. I know a lot of people want nothing to do with him, but he's the guy I'd be looking to target.
  24. Actually, that's a really good point. I've actually heard that it's expected to fall to 88 cents, then recover towards 94 cents by the end of the year. That could definitely be playing a part.
  25. I've never understood this mentality. If Guerrero deserves to be in the HOF, why does the ballot number matter?
