He didn't throw very many changeups to really do much with the data (~40 or something according to Brooks). As for the fastball, he dramatically increased the usage of his sinker last year, which may have more to do with the swing rate.
Maybe. It seems to be the trend right now among a lot of teams though. They'd rather get cost certainty and have the odd case like Romero (which is basically an outlier). Hard to argue with it either way.
I want Izzy gone too, but if we're being honest and he was on another team last year, he'd probably be one of the guys all of us would be targeting to take over 2nd base...
Romero wasn't a bad signing at the time. No one could have predicted he'd get the yips. Anyhow, shooting for the fences sometimes works, but it also sometimes produces Ryan Howards.
His salary is really not that bad all things considered. Regardless of his spring, I have to think there would be teams that would take most if not all of the salary. There's lots of pitching injuries right now it seems.
Maybe we can bring Marcum back too. M&M reunited!
I would love to see McGowan make the rotation though. He'll probably only be able to give us half a season or so, but the innings he does give us are probably better than anything anyone else can produce.
This is probably the ideal time to sell on him actually. His hype is through the roof, and probably won't match his performance (although he should be good).
I'd expect it'll be low for a few weeks, but fortunately he doesn't rely on velocity to be effective. I really think we'd be best off to DL him for 2 weeks though and give him a chance to get up to speed properly.
Interesting that Morrow said he has only seen the new protective headgear in pictures online. You'd think that samples would have been provided to teams so that all players could try them on and get a close look at them. I'd say that's a huge failure by MLB and the manufacturer.
I don't care about the highschool arms, but I like the Cards approach of selecting good hitters and worrying about where to play them later much more than selecting great athletes who can't hit and hoping to teach that to them. Get good bats early and draft great athletes later.
Morrow is struggling with command clearly, but his stuff actually looks pretty good. You have to wonder if the added bulk in the offseason might take him a little while to adjust to.
Maybe, but outside of Rasmus there's pretty much nothing on the FA list at center next year, and if we look to trade it's going to cost us pitching. I just hope we don't try to carry Gose AND Goins as starters in the same year.
I suspect that's the plan though, that Rasmus will walk and Gose will take over CF. If that's what is going to happen, then it makes sense to have Gose get full playing time in AAA.
