  1. The thing is, that's the kind of player you're generally talking about for a 4th outfielder. In fact, both may very well be above average 4th outfielders. It would be nice to have a DH or 1st baseman who could also play the outfield (or, you know, a Zobrist), but barring that we could do a hell of a lot worse than what we have.
  2. No point in JV faking that shot if he never actually takes it.
  3. Well, he IS 39 (almost 40), doesn't move well to block balls in the dirt anymore, can't run, and can't hit. The only thing he really brings is experience and framing, and I'm not sure either make up for the rest anymore (it did at one time).
  4. I'm a little concerned about it, but AA can probably find a AAAA player (someone's gotta play outfield in AAA) that could step in if more than Pillar was needed. Damn, that's a lot of A's.
  5. I really don't mind McGowan on a 1 year / 1M major league deal.
  6. Norris needs to make his van cooler! http://www.cbc.ca/asithappens/features/2015/02/05/for-sale-star-trek-boogie-van/
  7. Beachy is still out there too, and probably isn't going to cost a fortune.
  8. The extra talk all this is generating will probably inflate his value.
  9. I bet KK is wishing he did that on purpose right about now...
  10. Maybe they could defer money to do it. Say 3M this year, and then 3M each of the following 6 years. It wouldn't cripple us in future years, and would still probably work out to ~17M or 18M equivalent for Shields after taking inflation into account. There's always ways to work it out.
  11. Yeah, the stars definitely were aligned. However, it's now only two weeks before spring training, and it seems like teams that DO have some flexibility are intent to hold onto it for now and go after Moncada, etc. It'll be interesting to see what happens, but I think at this point in the spring, a 1 year deal (and probably a firing of his agent) have to at least be considered.
  12. The other thing to consider regarding Shields, is that if he can't find a multi-year deal he likes, maybe he'd be willing to take a higher cost one year deal and try again next winter (with the landscape being stacked next winter, not sure how smart that would be). If he did do this, we've already lost our 1st round pick, so it would be easier for us to sign him than some of the other teams.
  13. His velocity has actually been trending upward slowly (similar to Cliff Lee).
  14. Yeah, I don't believe we'll sign him either. Fun to speculate and try to find ways to make it work though.
  15. Well, Shields IS an upgrade over Buehrle, and probably gives you an extra 20 innings too. You're right though, those guaranteed innings from those three would be huge. It would take a massive load off the pen, and with them not being overworked, probably results in an improved pen too.
  16. You should just give up and send me your good players. I'll also take Domi and Pickard if you're feeling generous.
  17. They haven't posted it on proboards, so all I can see is the portion on Yahoo. There might be prospects and picks involved. The part that Yahoo shows is St. Louis and Beachemin for Boedker and Gudas.
  18. That's an EXTREMELY important negative result. It essentially killed the Expos, and I believe is badly hurting the Rays and A's.
  19. Interesting. I wondered when Goldbull was going to trade St. Louis. I really like Gudas, so I kind of like this for Goldbull. Should help both teams though. I'm kind of surprised he hasn't traded Streit to BTS yet.
  20. I wonder if there's a team out there that wants Buehrle? His salary is a bit high, but they know what they'd be getting and it would only be a 1 year commitment (plus a draft pick I'd assume). Someone is bound to have a bad injury this spring and not want a long term commitment. Shields would be an upgrade for us, and if his price really has dropped into the 15-17M range, then you could even structure it to replace Buehrle's salary this year and a drop next year when payroll is going to be tight (no need to backload it). I don't think it'll happen, but lots of possibilities of ways to be creative. There's even the Scherzer method from this year.
  21. Here's some stuff: http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/anthopoulos-vision-all-hinges-on-young-pitching/
  22. A new stadium has nothing to do with MLB. I agree that we're probably looking at least 20 years from now though, probably longer.
  23. If Kane is out for the season, I think everyone else who makes the playoffs should be giving me their 1st round draft pick
  24. I almost feel bad about it. I really did have no idea, neither did I initiate the trade talks. The rotoworld notes are insane on the whole mess: First he was a healthy scratch, then they say he was scratched for violating the dress code, then he was visiting the team doctors, then he apparently got into an altercation with his teammates (who apparently threw his violating clothes into the shower to send a message). The upside for JFaS, is that if (when by the sounds of it) he's traded, he probably turns into a complete monster on a top offensive line.
  25. Sounds pretty damn good to me!
