  1. Americans seem to have that mentality in general. Same thing with health insurance. Certainly feel bad for his family, but I'm not a big fan of this kind of fundraising. Surely some company would have given him a special sponsorship deal or something for the $20k to help his family out, and he makes some appearances for them or something.
  2. What are you looking for?
  3. Yes, I'd like to see this happen (I suggested it in one of the other threads). Use him as the backup catcher, and if he can't be fixed and you have to cut him you haven't really lost much. He has good power, maybe he can start to tap into it. I'd rather go that route than pay a few million for a backup guy who can't hit to save his life.
  4. This offensive start is just as bad as last night. Thank God we're playing Phoenix.
  5. Too many forced shots at the end.
  6. I'm not sure about the wisdom of not just resting the players, but they're making it interesting.
  7. They're on pace!
  8. This might be a really long night.
  9. Yeah, I suspect it'll take 3/50 or 1/20 at minimum. I'd be fine with either of those though, as long as the weirdness in his swing at the end of last season isn't an issue going forward.
  10. According to the reports, he wants to be guaranteed to do both as a condition of signing.
  11. I don't see any reason Lawrie couldn't play outfield as well. He's really ideally suited as a super utility guy, kind of like a poor man's Zobrist.
  12. Wow, that missed dunk almost made it to half court!
  13. Among qualified relievers last year, Casilla's 3.67 xFIP was 56th out of 135 , and 75th out of 222 with at least 30 innings. For reference, that places him 0.07 behind Osuna and 0.04 ahead of Biagini. Tolleson was 97th out of 222. I'm not trying to claim they're elite, but elite is f***ing expensive. We need to fill out the pen, and those guys can produce slightly above average results, with established upside for more. Both are coming off down(ish) years, which is why they could be good value signings. Pair that with a higher upside guy like Holland, and you have the makings of a good pen.
  14. Hardly. Casilla's last 3 years are 3.45, 3.46, and 3.67 xFIP, and he appears to likely be an xFIP beater (3.19 career ERA, 3.93 xFIP in 555 innings). He has closing experience (which is always nice), and his velocity is still there. Very good curve and slider, K rate over 10 last year. Numbers were inflated by the home runs, which were at a much higher rate than normal for him. Tolleson has put up xFIPs of 3.83, 3.31, 3.89 the last 3 years. Last year suffered the home run issues too (24% hr/fb). Controllable through 2018, also has closing experience and should be signable for very little.
  15. You're a hoot.
  16. I really want to see us add Holland, Casilla, and Tolleson (and Tyson Ross somehow). I think Holland has the realistic potential to produce 3 to 4 WAR over 2 years, which is decent value. Tolleson is cheap (Tex wants to resign him on a MiLB deal apparently), and has good upside. Casilla has experience and good stuff still. Was hurt last year by the long ball for whatever reason.
  17. Martin has produced 5.4 war in his first 2 years of the deal, and was very good in the 2nd half last year after a horrible first half. He's earning the paycheck so far.
  18. Man alive did Bell put up some cringe worthy defensive numbers last year.
  19. I'd be fine with either of these, but I wouldn't want to trade Stroman unless it was something like this. We're gonna be down a few SP after the season as it is, and we aren't exactly a hot destination for pitchers.
  20. FFS Demar, you don't need to do that.
  21. I think the top marginal rate is a bit higher (they're basically charging people like 50% interest on the Ontario taxes owed, or some ********). Still, as you mentioned, only a portion is taxed at that rate. I have to wonder if Rogers couldn't muck with it though. Basically offer a player 1 special preferred share, pay out most of the salary as a dividend, and have it only taxed at the dividend rate or something? I think CEOs and other high earners have been doing that for a long time, but I could have the details wrong.
  22. It's silly atm, but it might become true if Trump takes an axe to the upper Federal tax rate brackets in the States like he's promised.
  23. I wouldn't mind us working out a similar extension to the Inciarte one with Pillar. They seem like pretty good comps.
  24. Peter O'Brien was designated. I wouldn't mind signing him as the backup C, who in an emergency could probably play a few innings in the OF. He's apparently not great behind the plate, but he's also being jerked around a bunch position wise. Maybe some time with Martin would improve his catching skills. If it didn't work out, you can always try to trade for a backup catcher later.
  25. Let's see what comes out over the next while about this. His agent is doing a lot of gum flapping, but I have VERY serious doubts about Oakland offering EE Cespedes type money. I'm not sure I believe anything that's being said right now, unless teams start to confirm it. How he's received will likely be determined on what the actual truth is, as to who is "at fault", so to speak.
