    What does that have to do with anything? You manipulate service time to gain an extra year of control for which you're (probably) underpaying the player. Doesn't matter whether he's 25 after those 6 years or 30+.

    I don't think they expected to be able to trade Morales and Pillar, and once that happened and they decided some of the kids needed some more everyday at bats, then they needed some filler that can clog up the bench and shake some pom poms. Really, Brito is probably the ceiling of the guy we gave up to get him, so we probably upgraded there regardless. We simply got crap that's a slightly more pleasant consistency. Hanson might not have been our idea, but he has played a SSS decent SS and CF with other experience around the diamond, so in a rebuilding year that could have some value even if he couldn't even hit himself with his own bat if he tried. The other two guys both hold some intrigue imo, and are more the kind of lottery tickets you'd expect for Pillar. I'm not really sure there's anything to question.

    They really only started to tear it down last trade deadline, so calling it a lack of progress is pretty unfair. We replenished our farm system and then some (especially at the high end) while still trying to compete the last 2 years, and are now in a position to build a new core in two year time frame. I'd say it's going quite well.

    Meh, our starting pitching hasn't been an issue (yet). We just need to sneak Grichuk and Smoak out there every at-bat and we'll be fine.

    Catchers are really, really volatile, particularly in small sample sizes. You never know when they took a pitch off the palm of their glove and can barely grip the bat, or can't feel part of their arm, or are suffering through bruised balls, etc. Jansen projects as an above average catcher both with the glove and bat.

    I have to assume his neck is too sore. That's where you'd definitely use him.

    Screw having any particular arms in the pen during a rebuild. Take the guys who can perform best regardless of what hand. I'd rather see a righty give up a hit or two to a lefty than watch a lefty walk the batter just because matchups.

    Estrada is doing Estrada like things to the Red Sox again.

    He's been > 2 war in 3 of his 4 full seasons, and was really only a CF in one of them. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him average 2.5 WAR a year for the contract, although that's certainly not a given.

    Damn, losing Trea Turner hurts. He was off to a kickass start.

    You can probably replace him at similar cost if need be. Might as well see if a kid with higher upside can fill it and break out (like Alford). Plus, as soon as Pillar's legs give out, he's not gonna be 2 WAR.

    Doubt it as things stand right now, but a great year could certain change that. Stroman would be the likely guy imo.
