I think it's good to let Yesavage get 1-2 more starts and finish the season off on a positive note. Definitely could help play a role into his offseason preparation and mindset as he heads into 2027.

I think Miles gets an opportunity to start in the rotation next season.

1. Cease
2. Soriano
3. Yesavage
4. Miles
5. Ponce

In a perfect world, I’d still love to add another elite arm to pair with Cease at the top of the rotation. I’m not quite ready to trust Soriano or Yesavage as a true No. 1A/No. 2 option in a postseason rotation yet.

It would also raise the floor of the staff over a full regular season and give them more protection against injuries. Adding another top-end starter would push Miles and Ponce down the depth chart a bit, where one of them could be used in a multi-inning role or step into the rotation whenever an opening comes up.

I’d also keep Spaghetti as AAA depth, assuming he still has options remaining.

Soriano could also be used as trade bait perhaps for another bat or something if the Jays decided to go out and sign one of the top free agents arms available.

Jays from 2025 with more than 300 PAs OPS comparisons to this year:

George Springer -  .959/.740     -.219  (crap)

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. -  .848/.700  -.148 (crap)

Varsho - .832/.682   - .150 (crap)

Ernie Clement  - .711/.677    -.034  (mildly crap)

Alejandro Kirk - .769/.776     +.007 (push)

Okamoto to Bichette is a drop but that's not on Popkins

Barger to Sanchez/Pinango was  .755 to .734/.702 more weighted to Sanchez so a bit of a drop, but again can't really hang that on Popkins. Having a healthy Barger will be key next season. 

Thing is, if we went back and compared all these guys from 2024 to 2025... Springer, Varsho, Kirk, Barger and Clement all improved. Was that all on Popkins? Did he just forget to do his job this year?

Year to year variance is hard to pin down on a guy but yeah, it wouldn't shock me to see him hang (metaphorically) for it. Maybe he is great at identifying certain things in certain guys but pretty bad at the mental side? Or maybe the 1 year older bug just bit harder.

For sure Miles gets a shot at the rotation, I don't think for a second they claimed him with plan A being a leverage reliever long-term, even though he certainly could be right now. 

I also agree they need to add a legit arm.  Spaghetti is certainly not ready and yes he still has options. 

However, I think if they want Miles to start, he will at least be starting the year in Buffalo to build up innings and get back into the starter's regimen. Cease, Trey, Ponce and Yesavage (barring injuries of course) are stapled 1-4. Signing or trading for another top starter basically means the Spencers are in Buffalo. 

This is where a work stoppage would really suck for them since they wouldn't even be able to play for Buffalo since they're on the 40 man roster and 40 man roster guys can't play in the minors in a lockout.
