Heiny is a backup.  He gets exposed when he's used too much.  At least Valenzuela frames and throws well. Anything we get from him offensively is gravy.  We've gotten some gravy lately - it's been really nice.

That's not bad pitching, that's just s*** luck.

Cease pitched a lot better than his line would indicate in his prior start as well. I believe he likely would have ended up with a line of 6 IP 1 ER if he had simply fielded a ground ball cleanly in that start.

Agreed. When Kirk gets back, do you think the Jays keep Heiny around or they roll with Valenzuela as the backup?

Jays have got 1.5 fWAR out of Cease so far this season. He's right up there tied for 3rd highest pitching WAR. Cease has been more than fine in the early going. 

Sure he can be more efficient, and he could lower his BB/9, which are the only knocks against him so far. He's definitely capable of taking that next step. As we saw yesterday, managed to get 7 innings out of him. Need more starts like that moving forward. 

Would be nice if we get a 5+ WAR season out of him, which is definitely possible.

Cease hasn't been perfect by any means but he's pacing for a 6+ win season sitting at a 2.13 FIP after 7 starts. He seems to hit a wall partway through most of his starts as he tends to come out of the gate in ace mode before losing his command and/or composure at times when runners find their way onto base. If this is what he continues to provide I'll happily take it but of course more innings per start would be the icing on the cake.

I'd guess Valenzuela would return to AAA to serve as a high end catching depth option and continuing to work on his offensive game. This front office has surprised me more than once though with aggressive moves so it's entirely possible Heineman would be sent packing.

Is anyone really surprised by this? I thought they were going to be really good. They have some really good hitters and they always find pitching regardless of how much they trade away or lose due to injury. I had them in the 90-95 win range. Much better than the Red Sox and Orioles anyway. Yandy Diaz, Jonathan Aranda, and Junior Caminero coming at you is arguably one the best lineup trios in the game.
