The thing with check swings is that broadcasts have fooled everyone into thinking that breaking the plane of home plate = a swing.

That's not the rule. It's just a discretionary call by the ump on whether the player attempted to hit the ball (or some wording like that)

The way they are going to measure it with laser robots will be more liberal than the plane of home plate. It's something more like a 45 degree angle from the centre of the player's body. So many of these check swings we see on video will not be called swings.
