Omar Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Well from the looks of it the Dodgers countered with the $700M and that was a bridge too far for Rogers. Not sure how I feel from a fans point of view. The Sho would have been incredible for this team but being pragmatic, it would not have made sense. Doesn't take the sting away though.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 So the last 48 hours explains why I am the way I am. I should've just gone with my initial prediction. Getting sucked into the hype just isn't worth it in this town.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 700 mill, I cant even be mad at that point. Let the Dodgers pay him more than 8 MLB team's entire payroll..im good not getting him at that price

Jays used as leverage yet again. Despite the ridiculousness of the contract it would have been amazing for the team, city and country.
jaysthebest Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 So what's our plan as we missed out Ohtani? I don't want to see us re-signing Chapman with an overpay
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 With all the rumoured deferrals, I wouldve given him that lol Not my money!
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Re-sign Chapman/Hicks, bring back Teo and go get Bellinger.
philly30 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I hope the dodgers and their s***** fans have to endure ten + years of pain
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Apparently alot of money is deferred Does that have any luxury tax ramifications though? To me the luxury tax hit is the biggest detractor for placing so many eggs into one basket such as this as eventually this could prevent the Dodgers from being able to add enough talent to their minor league pipeline given the increasingly onerous penalties.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Isiah Kiner-Falefa come on down!! f***.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Re-sign Chapman/Hicks, bring back Teo and go get Bellinger. I see no reason for Hicks to be brought back as the returning pen is already a strength, but I could certainly see the team being in the bidding for Chapman and Bellinger, which unfortunately both have a lot of potential to be terrible contracts in the not too distant future.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 No Ohtani. No Soto. I doubt Bellinger signs here. Grovelling back to Chapman and another Varsho kinda deal loading...
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Isiah Kiner-Falefa come on down!! f***. That's not exactly a fair characterization that the team would go for bidding seriously on the best free agent in the history of the sport and instead pivot to a s***** utility player but I get where you're coming from.

By deferring money that helps with the tax implications
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Deferred money doesn’t change the AAV which is used for luxury tax purposes
Rafters Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 As expected.. Ohtani used the jays to up the asking price and stay close to his home in LA
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Isiah Kiner-Falefa come on down!! f***. Yoshinobu Yamamoto come on down!
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Can't really be mad at Rogers for not ponying up 700M + whatever amount of luxury tax they'd end up paying. It's going to be hard to win the fans over this offseason though. Bellinger is a landmine, and there's not much else out there. Robert? Yamamoto? Chapman and Gurriel won't really cut it.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Wow OK Tempting to close the thread just to make it all stop
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Deferred money doesn’t change the AAV which is used for luxury tax purposes Yeah I simply can't see the league allowing for this as it would be in direct contravention of the purpose of the luxury tax.

There is no winning the fans over at this point, it is what is. Management should just focus on making the best long-term moves for the franchise.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 this team is going to f***ing suck lol
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 JP Hoornstra absolutely nuked his reputation lmao
Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 This one hurts but at the same time 700m is insane.

Management should just focus on making the best long-term moves for the franchise. Yeah, I’d be trying to unload Bichette while his value is high. Or just plug and play certain positions like 3B, LF, etc. Ohtani signing with LAD is one reason why I don’t get emotionally invested in spectator sports anymore.
Scion Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 JP Hoornstra absolutely nuked his reputation lmao It's possible he was right, and the Dodgers responded by making an offer no one could top. It seems odd they would table $700 million if Ohtani was always going to sign with them.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 This one hurts but at the same time 700m is insane. Hoping for an insider update on this one soon if you can swing it.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Chapman (20M), Bellinger (25M), Teo (20M), Hicks (10M) We can legitimately get all those guys for 5M more than Ohtani who was only DHing for 2024. Let's see what Shatkins can do here...
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Lots of players out there... we have a lot of money left
