Blue Jays Lurker 2023 Verified Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Biggest blunder is the pen, 2nd biggest trading offense for defense given the team makeup, 3rd biggest is having no SP depth It seems the list just goes on and on against Ross Atkins. At some point, the buck stops there on his lap
DCJaysF Verified Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Was there any available left handed batter Outfielder with decent defense this past offseason that Atkins could have acquired for Moreno and Gurriell? Hard to say the ask for Ketel Marte or Bryan Reynolds. They are both switch hitters. Ketel was possibly the best chance as he is also on Arizona. Not sure if we actually chose Varsho cause he’s younger and cheaper or if Ketel wasn’t on the table by Arizona. I’d have paid a little more for both. Prior to Pittsburgh playing better to start the season Reynolds made it clear he wanted to be traded. But a lot of teams were interested in him. The Yankees kept checking in. However, when Pittsburgh started so strong they were able to convince him to re-sign. Not sure the asking price for either of those guys but I’d have given them what we gave for Varsho and a little more for either of them if they were on the table.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 But to be fair to all the “bench everyone anytime they make a mistake” crowd… even I would have benched Vlad yesterday in the first inning after his idiotic sequence of hitting and running stupidity. But with him it’s a chronic thing. Belt, Springer and KK don’t really have a history of this being a problem.
DCJaysF Verified Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 They tried for Nimmo too Mets were always gonna re sign Nimmo. Best we could do was drive up the price on him. Cohen would have matched any reasonable offer and he wanted to stay in NY. But yeah that would have been a great pick up

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Cimber is cooked, can’t even come close to 90 anymore Cimber hasn’t come close to 90 in years. Even 2021 he was only averaging 87
Blue Jays Lurker 2023 Verified Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 On my very first post, I mentioned about Cimber underwhelming velocity. Him and Yimi Garcia are the weakest part of this bullpen Another reflection of Ross Atkins.

It’s just that simple. By the way, what’s Oakland, Cinci, Miami, Colorado, and KC payroll?

Yankees, Phillies, Astros, etc. The Rays are just really really good top to bottom in the front office and scouting/coaching
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Cimber hasn’t come close to 90 in years. Even 2021 he was only averaging 87 Hmph I thought I remembered more 89/90ish

It’s just that simple. it is about the choice of players when you hire people, if we have more money we should be able to built a better team
DCJaysF Verified Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 How can Atkins rectify this significant blunder? Maybe give up another prospect just to convince an opposing executive that Varsho May still have a promising upside Nah he’s controllable until 2027. We don’t sell low on a guy controllable for 4 more years after 160 at bats. Even if worst case scenario they had to send him down to the minors like Teo to rework his bat we would. Odds of us doing that is very very low. But just saying if he was hitting .160 in late August say ,and we couldn’t even justify keeping his bat in the line up even for defense, we’d try to fix him for the post season or next year
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 it is about the choice of players when you hire people, if we have more money we should be able to built a better team Yeah, it’s just that easy.

el duque Verified Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Yeah, it’s just that easy. the rays have been doing that for several years, not easy but they must have a recipe
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 There is nothing any manager can do to make players play perfectly. Stuff like that is largely on the player himself. I doubt Belt has some huge history of this kind of problem. Vlad on the other hand…yeah. it’s like you guys think these players are out there thinking “well if I just don’t run this out and by not doing so hurt the team there won’t be any repercussions so why bother actually making the play…when it’s in my best interests to make the play and help the team…” These are split second reactions to plays. Yeah you drill, and drill and drill, and drill and try to make it as muscle memory habit forming as possible, but..nobody is perfect. Not even Kiermaier. Benching every player for every mistake works with 2 year olds, not adults. Kiermaier would get a pass for yesterdays blunder, it happens. The lazy plays and pure wtf moments like Vlad getting picked off rounding first yesterday need more attention
DCJaysF Verified Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 I’m glad they passed on Nimmo. I liked Conforto but he had some risk too as bounce back candidate. They like Varsho a lot. Clearly. Conforto was also was pretty anti vaccine in the press. Not sure if vaccines are necessary anymore to be a Blue Jay but they might have been still last year. I like Nimmo a lot tbh. Conforto is decent but at 30 coming off a year long injury and he’s not exactly singing for peanuts with Scott Boras as his agent. He wasn’t worth the risk
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 the rays have been doing that for several years, not easy but they must have a recipe Of course they do, and if anyone knew it, they would do it. But being perfectly honest, if they had money …they wouldn’t be running their payrolls that low either. Friedman ran that org that way because he had to, then he moved on to LA and now still has all the advantages Tampa has, along with all the advantages money has. It’s never as simple as “well they do it this way for less money so why can’t the Jays..” It’s like any other profession, some people are just better at it than others.

I would have been in favour of benching him aftervthat
el duque Verified Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 the 3 stars for the Jays 1) Bo, 2) Bichette, 3) short stop
Blue Jays Lurker 2023 Verified Member Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Chapman returning to his mean after a hot start. I mentioned about their over reliance to technology. The continuous use of that iPad and the constant tweaking messes up their rhythm. Gone were the days when power hitters trust their feel of the game.

But also Rays don’t care about their fan base’s ( or lack of one) want for consistent players they can attach to for a long time. So they would trade anyone anytime to get top prospects and draft picks. So imagine if we just traded Vlad or Bichette now to restock the farm. That’s the sort of moves the Rays will make etc. It works but it’s not fun for fans to have a revolving door of players. They did lock Wander Franco down though. But if they ever have a weak team and see an opportunity in a few years don’t be shocked if they trade him too.
