I feel like because the gambling commercials/content are annoying (hell, I've been betting on sports since I was like 10 years old) and I find them annoying people are making a wayyyy bigger deal out of gambling than what it is.

As Abom said - anything that gives you a hit of dopamine can lead to addiction; for some people that can be shopping, video games, gambling, food, ect.

It's a new industry so these companies are spending on marketing to attract customers but it will settle down after a few years.

This is a s*** take. Gambling is an addiction for many. There is a reason that there are no tobacco ads on TV etc. It's not about protecting 30 year old f***tards. It is about stopping kids etc from thinking gambling is cool.

Seeing Gretzky, St-Pierre and many others whore for these companies makes me totally disregard anything good they have done. They f***ing sold out. f*** them. The worst is all these asshats don't really need the money..just f***ing greed.

Gambling IS f***ing cool. I hope every 15 year old turns into Al Capone from watching those ads. If I have to go to the beach and smell the stench of pot wafting from some deadhead and can't f***ing punch that guy out for being an annoying s***, then you are just going to have to deal with Gretzky and your other former heroes shilling for a gambling company.

So is alcohol. So can video games. Some people are addicted to driving. Some are addicted to seeing movies. Some are addicted to the stock market. Anything can be addictive. The difference between those and most tobacco is that substances aren't being added to cause a physiological change in people to force them to be addicted, nor do they have direct health consequences to other people in their vicinity.

f***... "so can a lot of things"... "anything can be addictive"...

Online gambling got ahead of the law that is put in place to protect the most vulnerable in society. The sports personalities that we used to rely on to inform us about the in-depth workings of the team are now trying to convince us that the in-game parlay is f***ing awesome. Are you just part of the "EVERYTHING ON THE INTERWEB IS SOMETHING TO ARGUE ABOUT" crowd or do you have a mind of your own?

So you want to see alcoholics being wasted as something that is cool on advertisements?

You want to see people watching movies non-stop as f***ing awesome?

You want to see stock-market coke heads having a great time in ads?

Think about what you want to say. That s*** was just stupid.

Just f***ing die already. Take you're Grampa rants to the field with your 57 chevy and light it all on fire.

I am kidding...don't die...lol

(no...but honestly you are are f***ing idiot for comparing the smell of weed on a beach to a destructive industry that ruins marriages and causes suicides. There is a reason that both pot and gambling should not be advertised on TV)

Another member of the clueless, self-centered woke crowd, where "protecting the vulnerable" is defined only in their narrow view of who is considered vulnerable.

Someone with sensory issues = f*** that guy, hope he dies.

Someone prone to gambling addiction = stop the world, we need to protect that person.

Seriously, GFY you ignorant buffoon.

You think kids smelling weed at the beach is any less harmful or less of an advertisement for a vice than seeing Gretzky shilling gambling ads?

I have the Bet365 app on my phone and I'll bet occasionally on a game I'm watching. For entertainment purposes. I try to stay away from all these same game parlays or three-four team parlays because that's where you lose your money. They encourage people to bet on parlays always in the app with like super boost bets etc.

Everything today can be seen as addictive. Whether its alcohol, smoking, junk food, video games, binge watching a Netflix series, gambling etc. Everything in moderation but that's easier said than done in some cases. There are definitely external factors that lead people to be more addictive to things. Like for example, the lockdowns lead to an increase in drinking, people eating junk food or people binge watching series on Netflix. Other things as well. You're always going to have some people who can't control an addiction.

There is nothing wrong with a Bet 365 ad or Wayne Gretzky doing a Bet MGM ad on television. I guess the in-game programming can be a different debate. Maybe I just find it more annoying when watching Sportscentre where Jay Onrait tells me odds on a game or odds on player props etc for the entire program when showing sports highlights.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find any way in which smelling weed is harmful to anyone. Nobody is hotboxing a beach.

Where do you work? Maybe I'll get a job there and not shower for a month and see how you like it. Inhaling body odor isn't "harmful". Merely annoying. So why should I be concerned that my selfish and disrespectful behaviour is impacting you in a negative way?

Oh, and there is this on the CDC website, which took less than a minute to find:

https://www.cdc.gov/marijuana/health-effects/second-hand-smoke.html

The pro-cannabis cult is worse than the anti-vaxxer cult. They use "science" and "research" to support their cause but ignore the many, many negative impacts of cannabis. Far worse than seeing some dipshit on Sportsnet saying that the Jays have +120 odds to win the game down 4-3 in the 5th.

You should smoke a spliff and chill, bro. lol

McDonald's probably does more harm to society than all of these betting sites combined.

Ever go to other countries though? They have McDonalds but only like 1/10 of all the fat people. Maybe it’s just more McDonalds idk.

What the f*** are you talking about?

Not that hard to decipher. I called you Cheech because of all the weed you smoke, and “horse in the race” is an expression when someone has a vested interest in the subject matter

A responsible government should never promote gambling like it is. So many young men are being crippled, financially and emotionally. It affects your family life negatively, creates anxiety. I'm still f***ing stunned on how our government allows the amount of advertising as they do.

It will follow a pattern of the other vices the Government needs to keep other taxes in check. They will advertise it for years, someone will have a sad story (while there are thousands of sad stories which will go ignored) and then they will study the effects of advertising on addiction. Eventually after lawyers and lobbyists make billions, they will ban the ads and gambling will trot along doing no different for a generation. Then they will be forced to have other ways to get the people through the door.

Sports betting still only represents 12% of the gambling industry though (unless you include horse racing then it jumps a bit). The lottery is the real killer of families ($230 a year per American, which includes children and mormons)

No one here saying gambling is a bad addiction is wrong. But it is what it is. If any of you have family members or yourself are in the 300,000 Canadians at risk. there is help out there (another industry that helped by vices)

I think I saw somewhere that gambling is the cause of more suicides than any other drug or alcohol addiction. Not sure if it's true. I wouldn't mind if gambling and alcohol commercials were banned. Don't really care if Rogers or the sports leagues made less money because of it.

Before suicide usually comes divorce....or soon to be.

Like Brownie, you should’ve just stuck to me on your woke Crusade, Wry

Why are you dragging me into this? I've never even responded to this thread and have no idea what you're talking about. That said - I do enjoy cannabis, so maybe that's why I don't remember?

A lot of gambling suicides that happen at the casinos like in Niagara never make the news.

A gambling addiction will probably leave you in financial ruin which can ruin your life for decades or until the day you die even if you get help. It's just so normalized these days, heck you can gamble in videogames in the form of microtransactions which exposes the vice to soooooooooooooo many kids.

It's a lost battle.
