Oh I took it in the sense the Jays would get a bigger return since there was way less $ left on the deal if they were to trade him. Speaking of luxury tax if a team releases a player does a players contract count against the tax?

 

If the Jays are up against it next offseason it might make sense to attach money and trade Springer just to get rid of the cost against the tax.

 

That was my point. Although your suggestion also works (just give them $$$ in the trade to increase his value). I don't know how that works v. the luxury tax. In my scenario, if you signed him for 8 years $180M, the AAV for luxury tax is $22.5M annually. If you paid him $100M in the first 2 years, then traded him - would the team receiving him have to pay him 6 years $80M in real money ($13.3M AAV), but would $22.5M go against their luxury tax calcs? I never thought that far down the line.

Yeah, the wear and tear and the injuries the last few years make it tough - there's so much downside here in his age 32 season. But at the same time, he's Mike f***in Trout and it wouldn't surprise me if he puts up a 6-7 WAR MVP season this season. It would be tempting as hell, but you'd probably regret it.
