Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 When Vladdy said not to challenge and Charlie did it anyway (he has the final say; the umpire listens to the manager, not the background or video relay room), Vladdy was pretty stand-offish for the remainder of the half inning towards the dugout/coaches. He threw a mini-tantrum basically. He threw the ball away in disgust initially, then obviously chirped at them with arm gestures and words after the subsequent play (tag at 1B) didn't go in their favor when it should've (no challenge left). Our broadcast: Vladdy knows what happened (he was there) and dugout should've listened to him. We could've used that challenge on two plays since, but here we are. Phillies broadcast: Vlad should've been taken out. I understand his frustration but you do not show up your coaching staff. Rob Thompson would've taken him out and benched him for that attitude. I don't know who is right - do you discipline the young guy for throwing the tantrum or do you accept that you f***ed up and let his ego ride for a bit? Martinez and Schneider both went and talked to him in the dugout, Charlie didn't. How is this even a discussion? As Charlie said in the post game interview - the video room told me to challenge, so I challenged it. End of f***ing story. That's literally their only job and they've been pretty good at it this year. Vlad can pretend all he wants that he knew the answer, but players are wrong about this all the time.

To be fair to Vlad, he knows if his foot was on the bag or not, the video room only knows what it kinda looks like from certain angles. He KNEW, the video room thought they knew. As for the mini-tantrum by Vlad - yeah, can't let that slide. You take him aside and you tell him straight up that regardless of how you feel in the moment, it's the managers call to make and just because it goes against what you said to do, doesnt mean you get to throw a hissy fit. You're a professional. Bring us your thoughts in the dugout during the next half inning and we'll go down the hall and talk about it without it showing anyone up and setting a bad examnple for your teammates. Your a valued leader in the clubhouse Vlad, so act like it. Now get the f*** out of here and go have the kind of at bat everyone here knows you can have. The end.

Whether the review was a good call or not, you can’t have the player acting like that and then not even talk to him in the dugout after.
