Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 Hrmm... not the worst thing in the world to give him a bit of a breather.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 Broken neck In reading up, I had completely forgot that had also been taking out that game against the Yankees with forearm soreness. Could explain his recent command issues.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 Zero surprise. Was telling my nephew after the last start, "guaranteed he goes on the IL before his next start."
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 The best thing for the club he's been horrible in his last few starts to the point that they said he had the 4th worst ERA in the league in his last 7 starts. This will take him out till season end and then the one game playoff which they would pitch Ray. Then they can re-evaluated his situation going forward if he's healthy enough.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 I'm not too worried about this. Let him start one more game against Baltimore. Blessing in disguise after that disgusting game.
M.E. Verified Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 He won’t start in the playoffs at this point so as long as Stripling does well in that slot for two starts it’s all ok.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 With a finesse pitcher the margin for error is so much lower. Hopefully this phantom DL stint can help him right the ship.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Trade and give his 20 mill to Ray. And then in 2 years, we'll be saying the same thing about Ray lol. Pitchers as long term investments just suck unless you're the Kershaw's/Scherzer's/Cole's of the world.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 AJ Preller's ears just perked up. You could actually build an MLB average bullpen from the bullpen they cut next year and still get Abrams and Euribiel Angeles in the deal.

Its not that simple of a decision in either direction. Players make sustainable gains all the time. You have to do really dig into what exactly the player is doing now to give them better results. With Ray I think the gains he made are sustainable he should be a quality starter going forward.

Agreed that it's not that easy because if it were, there wouldn't be so many bad contracts out there. For me, I think Ray is an above average pitcher but I'm not declaring him an elite pitcher until he does this for another season or two. I hope his contract reflects that if he comes back here.

You're acting as if he was s*** or something before this year, the only real difference I see is the greatly improved command, I think he's figured it out.

I said in my post above that Ray is an above average pitcher. Count me as skeptical to believe someone who has a career year during their walk season is likely to keep that pace up. It's going to be a tough call. I'm a much bigger believer in Semien as being able to keep his level of play up going forward since he's already done it. I think Ray fills a more important need but Semien is the safer bet. I don't think neither of these guys will give us an type of discount to come back. Let's hope Shatkins can strike a reasonable deal for both.

I doubt it, he had 2nd/MIF in his contract and play everyday, I see a man with bulging eyes at the Winter meetings, lol.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Re-sign Ray and Matz, move Biggio back to 2nd/OF get a filler at 3rd who's decent and some reliable pen bullets. Or f*** it sign em all and bulk the pen.

Last season was Ray's walk year after his first contract and he had the worst year of his career. Kind of disproves the whole "career year on walk year" theory don't you think? He looks to have unlocked the key to maximum performance with himself by rebuilding his body with twice a day workouts and returning to simpler, easier to repeat mechanics from earlier in his career. I sincerely think he is going to be a top of the rotation pitcher moving forward. I don't necessarily think he'll be competing for Cy Young awards every season as he's basically a 2 pitch pitcher, but he started spring training dealing, and after a little bit of a slow start after a minor injury scare in the spring, has actually been getting better and better as the season has continued.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 It is going to be a fun off-season. Could be. Unless it's one of the offseasons where Toronto gets snubbed.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 Could be. Unless it's one of the offseasons where Toronto gets snubbed. Top free agents are still the worst way to build. The 1 year deal is the new super value, and still hasn't replaced trading for controllable assets.
