Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2021 Posted July 11, 2021 Jeeze, I thought for a second that you were crazy for comparing Biggio to Gurriel. In my mind I see Gurriel as having the much higher upside, but checking his FG page, I had no idea he's been so underwhelming. I grew up loving the Jays, but as an adult I pay more attention to the rest of the league as a whole than strictly the Jays. I had no idea how s***** Lourdes has been this year. What makes you under-rate Biggio, and over-rate Gurriel in the first place? They've been on-line to get back to there career norms, soon hopefully.
5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted July 11, 2021 Posted July 11, 2021 lol... they're competing right now and are in contention??? They're 9 games out at the all-star break. Is there an outside chance that they could sneak into a wildcard spot? I don't see it. The pitching just isn't there and the offense is a little hit and miss. They could go all out at the trade deadline like AA did in 15 and that would change things, but I don't see Atkins going that route.
5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted July 11, 2021 Posted July 11, 2021 Cavan Biggio has amassed 4.0 career WAR in 939 plate appearances vs. Sogard's 4.2 WAR in 2484 plate appearances. Not exactly a great comparison, better try again. Haha yeah I guess I'm being hyperbolic, a few beers in over here tonight
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2021 Posted July 11, 2021 He's been quite good lately, climbing rapidly in consideration to how he started out. 4 for his last 22 with some bad plays at 3b is quite good? I don’t think anyone thought he was as horrendous as his start (which would be he should never see a mlb field). I don’t really see what the issue is calling him a 40 FV player. Head over to FG and tell me which grades you object to. But then grade him as a 3b, he’d be 30. That’s really the only reason I can’t stand him, that he’s playing 3b as a regular and should never sniff it. Didn’t hate him until I watched the opening day NYY series and saw there was no way in hell he should be at 3b I wouldn’t object to him being the FT 2b going into next year if Sem walks. Like Jansen’s relatively hot start to his career, I think by next year the talk of him being a 4 WAR player is going to cool and the homers will start accepting he’s a league average starter

Biggio’s value is built into him being a 2b, if he’s a corner OF like Gurriel you basically got a Randall Grichuk out there, just obp instead of slg. Gurriel is actually/should be a plus bat

In theory he should be able to hit .280+ with 30+ homers and helpful OF defense, year after year. Biggio is like the polar opposite. I can see why many would prefer Gurriel. Belief in him and skepticism of Biggio.

Their value is very similar thus far is what I'm getting at, certainly different profiles obviously, but wOBA and wRC+ seem on par, both guys have been much better as of late. We need Biggio back at 2B, while sprinkling in RF/3B and 1B when needed. As we all know, Biggio 2B - Semien SS - Bo 3B would be ideal. Espinal has proven in a small sample he can take care of any position in the diamond, feels good.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
