max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 Lol, no he wouldn't. He might even be their sixth best behind Ryu, Pearson, Stripling, Matz, and Ray. Really it would just be a five way tie for second best. Walker would just be another body in the pile. I keep forgetting about Stripling for some reason when discussing the Jays rotation. Part of the reason why could be how utterly forgettable his appearances in a Jays uniform were. Will he even be utilized as a full time starter? It looks like he's never pitched much more than 120 innings in a single season in his entire career. The most starts he's made in a single season is only 22 as well.

Every team is going to be very worried about innings increases from 2020. At this point it seems like Toronto is planning on using a huge line of starters and moving people in and out of the pen/rotation (or up and down from AAA) all year. And doing lots of piggyback games. And skipping turns. Don't expect any 33 games started or 180+ IP guys

Walker just proved last season by being our 2nd best pitcher down the stretch so why couldn't I say he'd be our 2nd best pitcher for next season? But I do agree that he's closer to that pile than he is separating from it for next season.

We care about how good the players will be going forward, not what their ERAs were last year

We care about how good the players will be going forward, not what their ERAs were last year You talk like youre a pitching coach for the team and know that Ray/Matz/Stripling are going to turn it around for sure next year. There's a chance for them to do it for sure but they can easily be another Garcia/Anderson/Roark. Walker was the best pitcher out of the bunch last year and that wasn't just looking at "ERA." That's all I was saying.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 Projections exist and they are smarter than you and I Curious but how do projections take into account fat Vlad vs skinny motivated Vlad?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 Curious but how do projections take into account fat Vlad vs skinny motivated Vlad? They don't, and shouldn't. There's no model for how weight loss will affect batting performance, let alone defense.

It's more than weight loss... it's his desire to want to be the best he can be at all times. Just wanted to show that projections aren't always the be all, end all.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 Vlad his very good projections, lmao Ya I know but that could have been with Fat Vlad showing up to camp. Sometimes it's good to see the player with your own eyes and use the numbers alongside to make your final judgment lol. Otherwise you start making decisions where you take out Shoemaker and Ray in favour of AJ f***ing Cole in Game 1 of the playoffs lol.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 The Sportsnet commenters are going to be irate when Taijuan Walker signs for like 1/$7M with the Mariners or something. Lol yup. Everyone online seems to want to sign Walker to like a three year deal. You guys reminded me of this abomination of an article, my god... https://jaysjournal.com/2021/01/25/blue-jays-steer-clear-masahiro-tanaka-focus-attention-elsewhere/
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 (edited) Rather have Semien at his deal with his upside, and the possibility of getting a pick for him next year if he leaves is a sweet bonus. Edited January 30, 2021 by Jays24
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 Rather have Semien at his deal with his upside and the possibility of getting a pick for him next year is a sweet bonus. Yes, and with Martin possibly ready to roll in late April 2022.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 Yes, and with Martin possibly ready to roll in late April 2022. I think we're all wondering what position Martin will thrive in. Really hope he can become an elite CFer since we already have Groshans to take a spot in the infield. Martin can start off as a corner OFer and transition to CF as soon as Springer is ready to transition to a corner OF spot.

Could also end up being the reverse of that though. I think it depends who's ready 1st and what openings there are. If Groshans struggles this season and Martin obliterates the minors, he might take over for 3B in 2022. It all depends really.

Ray Verified Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 5-10 signings per day now Still waiting for the mid-tier SP market to get going after the Bauer domino falls. It’ll be interesting to see where Odorizzi/Paxton/Walker land, and for how much.
Ex Player Verified Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 In percentage points, what do you guys think the odds are we land Bauer?? I think its about 1 in 3 at best
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 In percentage points, what do you guys think the odds are we land Bauer?? I think its about 1 in 3 at best With management saying we were done the heavy lifting, maybe 5%?
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 In percentage points, what do you guys think the odds are we land Bauer?? I think its about 1 in 3 at best Shatkins have been pretty transparent about their intentions this offseason. If they said that their heavy lifting is done, I believe them. They said they want the flexibility to be able to go after some of the free agents next offseason. So I'd say there's about a 5% chance of us getting him where his market would totally have to collapse.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 I just take great pleasure in us not being the team that gives Bradley Jr the 3/42- 4/56 off he’s looking for. Yuck

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 There's no way he's getting anything close to 4/56. Agreed. I just got a chuckle on reading latest update: Bradley, who turns 31 in April, is said to be looking for a contract of more than three or four years. He would be justified in noting that Denard Span signed a three-year, $32 million contract at age 32 in 2016, and that Michael Bourn signed a four-year, $48 million pact at 30 years old in 2013. Andy Martino SNY talking those numbers- though Mets said to be far apart- as most teams should be
